I am getting ready now to file a PSA to homeschool in CA in October and I came across the line for "school's name" and I drew a blank. I have come up with some in the past but none I like.

What is your school's name and how did you come up with it?

Ours is "Midvale Academy". I'm a huge Gary Larson fan and I figure if people get it they'll think it's funny, and if not, oh well, they'll just think it's a name. It's sort of irreverant and he may want to change it if we're still homeschooling when he's old enough to care, or maybe he'll think it's funny too.

I felt the same way when I had to file our affidavit. I ended up just using the name of our subdivision and adding 'academy' to the end. It sounds much more formal than we actually are.

We just call ours "Home". (ok, so we don't have to file any papers...if we did I'm not sure what it would be) But the word "home" itself is pretty nifty.

home (hom)

2. The physical structure within which one lives, such as a house or apartment.
3. A dwelling place together with the family or social unit that occupies it; a household.
4.
a. An environment offering security and happiness.
b. A valued place regarded as a refuge or place of origin.
5. The place, such as a country or town, where one was born or has lived for a long period.
6. The native habitat, as of a plant or animal.
7. The place where something is discovered, founded, developed, or promoted; a source.
8. A headquarters; a home base.
9.
a. Baseball Home plate.
b. Games Home base.
10. An institution where people are cared for: a home for the elderly.

We don't have to have a name but the kids wanted one. They named it after my father because he believed so strongly in education.

We were into Hitchhiker's Guide at the time, so we named it Milliways Academy... it was meaningful to us but sounded school-y enough on paper.

Maple Tree Academy

We had 5 maple trees surrounding our home at the time we chose the name.
We wrote down a bunch of potential names and drew that one out of a hat.

We are Red Mountain Academy; I used a very rough translation of dh's family name and we liked it. The "Academy" just makes it sound more formal. Informally (not what I put on the PSA for CA), I add "All-Boys Boarding School" since, well, I have all boys and they do "live" at their school.

Hehehe you are more imaginative than I, ours is Bellbird College...which is part of the suburb name we live in Of course, we are moving in two weeks, and that burb name is not so cool... so I think the boys & I will have a brainstorming session to rename ourselves (we don't have to fill out any official forms using this name though!)

Ours is Yggdrasil Academy. Yggdrasil is the World Tree, which is a symbol for the universe and everything in it, and all the connections. It reflects our religious/spiritual influences, the scope of our school (learning about the whole world, and learning everywhere), and it just sounds cool.

We don't have to have a name, but I figured why not?

We don't need a name, but we have one because we like the sound of it. It's just "our street name" academy.

When we had to have a name it was GALA - Great Adventures Learning Academy. I wanted something that didn't seem babyish and grew with us, so having the acronym as well as the name seemed to fit the mark.

We call our school Sunflower Lane Academy because I love sunflowers and we always grow lots of very tall one in the warmer months. Our last name is Lane.

Oooohh I love sunflowers too! DH calls me his sunflower because I follow the sun

I've been thinking about this some more especially because I want/need to start up a HS blog for us just to keep me organized. I asked DH to come up with something that wouldn't make people think we were fluffy loons and he says to me "So 'Karl Marx Memorial Academy' is out?"

I was thinking because all of our kids have Tolkien middle names we could use that as a theme. It'd be nice to use Arda which is "the world" in there somewhere. Suggestions?

Our school name is Firethorn Academy. The firethorn is a prickly evergreen shrub with simple flowers at first followed by masses of bright berries. (Similar to a holly only prettier IMO) Relatively easy to grow, the firethorn is versatile and virtually has unlimited use in the sunny landscape. Its branches are quite pliable however the barbs are a force to be reckoned with. Descibes my DD perfectly
