Hi ladies! My son is "officially" only a Kiddy but honestly everything he is doing is pretty much 1st grade. Mind if I tag along?
We are using:
Math - Miquon orange and Singapore 1A seems to be where we have finally settled and are enjoying math again. Lots of manipulative and games.
Science - a blend of REAL Science Odyssey Life; Magic School Bus; Discovery Channel documentaries & games; and this cool experiment book called Ancient Science.
History - History Odyssey Ancient using SOTW1, Usborne Ancient History, Usborne World History, History Pockets, Magic Tree House books, and documentaries.
Reading - he is a strong reader so we are just reading to him and doing read alouds with him right now. I am getting him Aesops Fables and a book of Classic Faerie Tales for Xmas, and hope to do some more formal LA exercises with it such as reading comprehension, etc.
Grammar/Spelling/Writing - So far very little. He hates writing with pencils so I got a dry erase lapboard for him and put up a big DIY dry erase board in the kitchen for school - that works well so far. Not alot of writing as he gets really frustrated with it - his brain is faster than his little hands and it makes him super mad. Pendemonium games over on Cosmeo.com have DS obsessed with parts of speech like nouns, verbs, adjective, adverbs, pronouns, etc. We'll copy a page out of one of the history books and pick a paragraph to read and label sentence parts ocassionally. Saw the book "Sentence Family" that can be used to teach grammar, so I think we may try that. Seems like stories to explain the part of speech and then activities like artwork and narration to cement the info.
Anyone able to suggest any other LA/grammar/spelling programs? He is a solid reader, reluctant writer, and very easily bored by repetition.
Language - DS is requesting Latin and Mandarin. WOW. Can't afford Rosetta Stone at the moment and I think Latin would be a better "base" so planning on getting the Song School Latin I think, again another Xmas gift LOL
Other - Swim just ended. He is in gymnastic, ballet/tap, boys hiphop, and various play dates. Lots of art time incorporated into other subjects and just for fun. We also have memberships to the local zoo which is awesome. ANd lots of great eco-centers nearby.
