What are your favorite read-alouds or your kids' favorite independent reads for ages 7-10? Classic literature as well as contemporary, too.
My daughter, 8, just discovered The Boxcar Children and loooves them! She has been reading the Great Illustrated Classics children's abridged versions of classic books like Robinson Crusoe, Little Women, etc. and just flies through them.
That's fantastic that she loves all those old classics. My son really likes the more contemprorary books, but we try to get him to read classics too, or at least abridged versions of them for kids like "A Christmas Carol" which he loved (because of the ghosts!)
Here are some good ones:
The Chronicles of Narnia
Anne of Green Gables series
Little House series
Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys
There's also the Classic Starts books that have ones like The Odyssey, Great Expectations, Frankenstein...
Some that have been hits here as read-alouds:
Ronia the Robber's Daughter - Astrid Lindgren
everything else by Astrid Lindgren
Tove Jansson's Moomin books
The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett
A Little Princess - Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Silver Crown - Robert C. O'Brien
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - Robert C. O'Brien
Coraline - Neil Gaiman
The Green Book - Jill Paton Walsh

Cornelia Funke's Inkworld series
the May Bird series - Jodi Lynn Anderson
The Mysterious Benedict Society series - Trenton Lee Stewart
the Silverwing series - Kenneth Oppel
the Little House series - Laura Ingalls Wilder
the Swallows and Amazons series - Arthur Ransome
Oh, and my DD (almost 9) loves the Bone graphic novels by Jeff Smith. She also loved Zita the Space Girl, another graphic novel, by Ben Hatke.
My 9 year old's favorites right now are the "Down Girl and Sit" books. (There are four and are written from the dog's pov)
She also really like the author Dick King-Smith (Babe, Lady Lollipop, a Mouse Called Wolf, etc)
The Hundred Dresses
Books by Andrew Clements (most of these take place in a school, but we love them)
Mom to three very active girls Anna (15), Kayla (12), Maya (9).
