DD, a gifted 5 year old, has developed a huge interest in Mayan civilizations as of late (previously she was interested in Ancient Egypt, until she discovered a whole other ancient civilization with her name in it...her name is Maya). I'm looking for book suggestions about Mayans. I was an anthropology major who studied Mesoamerica, so I have tons of adult books...not so much for kids. We read anything ranging from picture books to things geared to 4th and 5th graders, since her reading level is around that range. So essentially, any book geared at K-5th grade would be fair game for us.
I am also trying to find books about Mayan hieroglyphics geared towards kids. DD is not interested in art very much, but loves to practice writing...I thought introducing hieroglyphics might be a happy compromise between the two.
I am also a lover of books , treehugger , and occasional soapbox stander!
My dd is Maya too; when she was little, we joked that her version of the abcs was the Mayan alphabet. Recently we checked out "Me oh Maya" (a time-warp trio book, fiction). While I realize that it is fiction, I am hoping that the author put some good information or sources in it.
A nonfiction one that we enjoyed was this: http://www.amazon.com/Ancient-Maya-True-Books/dp/0531241106/ref=sr_1_12?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1363235047&sr=1-12&keywords=mayans
We just found it on the library shelves. There wasn't a huge selection, but there are some.
