My DS is 7 and entering 3rd. He is in PS at the moment. Considering HS in the next year depending on when we move and to where. He has had Title 1 this year in school, has received OT & other extra help in school since K. Math is grade level. School said "at risk for" dyslexia. Had an outside OT eval with no surprises beyond what school has seen. Presently looking for someone to make the official dyslexia diagnosis and help us either teach him, get tutors and get the school moving in a better direction. Math at grade level. Reading has good days and bad days. On bad days he would have trouble with a Bob book. He is easily frustrated. Saw no real reading improvement in 2nd grade (awful teacher did not help). So thats our history at the moment.
What I am looking for is any direction to information on teaching reading to a dyslexic child. Books or websites etc. Mac computer games or websites or iPad apps or any electronic device that could help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Secondly how would I go about homeschooling with a learning disabled child? Any words of wisdom? Are there any homeschooling programs designed for learning disabled children? Something I could follow if we did make the change to homeschooling?
I do have a dyslexic child. Here are resources that have helped me:
My favorite resource is this yahoo group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/dyslexiasupport2/
Reading Reflex. http://www.amazon.com/Reading-Reflex-Foolproof-Phono-Graphix-Teaching/dp/0684853671/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1375042516&sr=1-1&keywords=reading+reflex Check your library, they may have it. This book will give you a nice overview of reading and a way to get a general idea of his strengths/weaknesses and many games, etc to help him out. It helped me get my dd to where she could actually sound out words.
Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz
The Gift of Dyslexia by Ron Davis
All About Spelling: http://www.allaboutlearningpress.com/all-about-spelling This hands-on spelling program was great for us. I actually modified it to teach reading to my dd. Now, they have a sister program called All About Reading. I don't know if it works the way I used the spelling program, however, it is an OG (orton-gillingham) based program. Most of the top programs for dyslexia are OG based. This is inexpensive compared to Barton (very popular scripted program that parents can implement) or the other OG programs that require a tutor. However, since your son is at a school, you may check with them to see if they use Wilson, Lindamood Bell, or other OG program. If so, get him started.
We used Explode the Code books as supplement/review. I adjusted the order a bit so that it worked with what I was already doing. Explode the Code has workbooks http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?subject=5&category=824 OR you can use their online version http://www.explodethecode.com/ Many kids prefer to use the computer vs a workbook so you might look into that.
It is possible that you will need to work on phonemic awareness skills in order to kickstart the reading. The first book (Reading Reflex) has lots of ideas for that.
I See Sam books. This is a series of decodable books that moves VERY slow. This is great for a dyslexic child because they get lots of practice with a small set of sounds before more are added. Here is a link to a place to purchase them. http://www.iseesam.com/ (We had the original b/w edition. . . color wasn't available; neither was an ipad edition) However, you can often find the first few levels free online. You just have to print them out.
My daughter also liked to play on starfall (www.starfall.com) but I don't really think it helped her much.
