This lady is completely . I guess she forgot that one of the beauties of living in this free country is the freedom to homeschool.

And linking it w/abuse...give me a break! There may be the extreme rare case of someone keeping their child in a closet and an article connecting it w/HS, but parents who homeschool are intelligent, caring, resourceful, diligent...among other positive attributes.

And pep rallies and cheering for the team. Oh yeah, I have great memories of stuff like that--NOT! Only the "cool" "beautiful" people were involved in those circles. And there was a lot of drinking and trouble in those circles too. I wouldn't be depriving my DD of anything by keeping her from that.

My guess is she probably did or would drop her newborn off at daycare before the cord was even cut.

Well, it'll be real easy to for a rebuttal. The paper has a forum with thread located here.

"I have met and talked with a variety of home-schoolers, both children and parents. Many have great gaps in their knowledge. Many are incredibly naive. Some do quite well -- they would have been superstars in school. Others can't wait to leave home, knowing full well that they have been cheated."

Um, wouldn't she find the same things to be true if she talked to schooled children as well???

This strange phenomenon called home-schooling has actually been around longer than any school system. It began with the first parents of our race and continues to this day.

Are you referring to the "our race" comment? I'm hoping she meant human race. Otherwise I like what she's saying. Homeschooling is the more natural way that's been around for ages. Public schooling is new. I liked her rebuttal.

I wish I could take the credit, but someone on one of my e-mail lists found it.

It really bothers me when people accuse homeschooling parents of being too controlling.

Do they all have amnesia about what it was like to be in school?

If I made my children sit in one assigned chair for the better part of seven hours, ask permission to use the bathroom, or raise their hand before being allowed to speak to me, I'd probably be brought up on charges of child abuse!

Even though I know this article is horrific, not based on any real research or even knowing many homeschool families, it has been bugging me for the past two days - how can she say such things!!
I am so upset by it.
Warm wishes,

Oops-- maybe I misunderstood. I think the oher poster was saying they couldn't find the rebuttal letter. That's because, maybe, it was part of a forum thread.

But you'd think this stuff is fact checked! That comment about the "founding fathers" being responsible for compulsory education is patently wrong and false. This lady doesn't know anything about the history of education.

Well, what did they expect? They should've never allowed something like that in the first place.

And really, what was she thinking? Her article was so cruel, misinformed and inflammitory. I wonder what her reaction is to her article getting pulled? Did she think there were only two families homeschooling in the world? Did she think we wouldn't see it?

Thanks for that update Andrea.

Did the OP edit her link? Because if I click on it now, it takes me to a forum that has the article in a post there, or that's what it seems.

Often papers that have their material online don't leave it up. Often I've clicked on a link to a news story, and the story is no longer there because it's no longer in the current issue.

Just some other ideas as to why it might not be there any more.
