"Because we can and we love it!"

I have one in school(by his choice) and one at home. I love having the option to homeschool(will not always be possible) and we really enjoy the lifestyle.

I usually go with "why not?" or "because we can." If I think the person's genuinely interested I usually explain a bit more: because I want my kids to learn more and better than they would in public schools, because I don't think public school is the right place for dd1, because we value family time together.

I don't homeschool, but if/when I am, I am inclined to say, "Well, everyone always told me I'd make a great teacher! My kids deserve the best!"

I actually came in here to post this very question b/c just today at the park I ran into a mom that I just kind of know.
I didn't even plan on going into the the whole "we homeschool" thing but she was asking about DD and school and I said, "she isn't really old enough b/c the cut off is Oct 1st" (DD will be 5 and most people are asking about kindergarten)
Duh to me b/c I totally forgot that preschool even existed : ...of course she was wondering about PRE school.
so I said, "well we are going to homeschool anyway"
I always say it really casual b/c I hang out here so much that I forget it isn't really a popular choice.
I have *almost* never gotten any bad reaction (Inlaws excluded) most people take it or leave it. but she said "why did you decide to do *that*"
So I started explaining things about the great groups we belong to to try and head off the socialization question when in my head I actually said, "STOP"
then I just said to her, "it really works for our family"
I just didn't know how to explain it without insulting her choices.

The first rule of homeschooling: water the plants! :

"Never felt a compeling need to institutionalize them, Bean dip anyone?"

Honestly though it's about choice,I'm grateful to live someplace where I have one.

Living where and how I do, i don't really have this problem. I do like the answer "Because I can."

We don't get questioned much at all - Santa Cruz is very homeschool friendly! I like "it's what works for us" as a generic answer, but when my brother asked me I said "because I want my kids to think for themselves - to learn how to think rather than what to think!"

We love learning together. Government school is way too rigid for our family.

I usually say "Because we can." If people want to get more involved, I say that I don't want my kids to lose their natural curiosity and zest for learning; I want them to learn because they love it, not because someone says they have to.

There are plenty of other reasons but that's usually enough.

A writer/runner/thinker/wife with two daughters (11/02 and 8/05), one dog, three cats, seven fish, and a partridge in a pear tree... in Vermont.

When I used to H/S that's what I would say. If the person kept hounding me for specifics then I would share more definite reasons for our choices, which were many different reasons at that time.

I always thought it was funny because the 2nd question out of someone's mouth was almost always "how can you teach them if you aren't a teacher/educated?" I would get that question almost every single time. I got so sick of hearing it. How could I NOT teach elementary education?

I get this one a lot from strangers. It's all I can do not to laugh.

I do occasionally respond with "Why do you ask?" but only if I'm feeling patient.

"Because we love it!!"

The truest answer to violence is love. The truest answer to death is life. The only prevention for violence is for the heart to have no violence within it.  We cannot prevent evil through any system devised by mankind. But we can grapple with evil and defeat it, but only with love—real love.
