Since DSS' mother has decided to unschool him (long story, but DH is not happy about it), we have been picking up more of the math/science type learning, which would otherwise not occur due to the way she unschools. But I'm also thinking that other things are being missed, particularly in the lit area. So my DH and I started to think about putting together some books, sort of our "literature canon" for the under-12 age group. We've started a listing, and would love to hear what other people include in their set. What we are trying to nail down are those books which are really broad cultural touchstones or books where you need to have read them to understand a great deal of more advanced reading (ie, needing an understanding of bible stories to be able to read and understand much of John Donne's poetry).

We've started with the following, with the 100% necessary items being starred:

(1) Greek and Roman Myths*
(2) the Bible*
(3) Norse Myths
(4) Egyptian Myths
(5) Mother Goose
(6) Grimm's Fairytales
(7) King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table
(8) Robin Hood and His Merry Men
(9) Padraic Colum's "The Children's Homer"*
(10) "Little House" Series
(11) Tom Sawyer
(12) Alice in Wonderland

Any other suggestions? Obviously, there are a ton of other kids' classics, but we are trying to focus on ones that really are those cultural touchstones. Since we have DSS 50% of the time, and are also really focusing on science and math, there is not time for everything...

We love Arabian Nights, Aesop's Tales, tall tales, Gilgamesh, children's versions of The Odyssey, Winnie-the-Pooh (A. A. Milne, not Disney's adaptations), and as many multicultural myths and legends as we can find in the library.
