good history/biography story books? (1st grade)

I HS using a public school district program and one of our first grade learning targets is to:

Identify individuals who made significant contributions to society in different eras"

I'd like to use a Charlotte Masonish approach by creating a time line and populating a "Book of Centuries" with information derived from books rather than text books.

Anyone have suggestions....

Cool, exactly what I'm looking for. Did you see the Draw Write Now series that also comes up on on one of the sidebar lists? I put one of those on my Interlibrary loan list too.
