i feel like i finally am up to the commitment/lifestyle of having locks

also, any tips for starting locks on an asian-haired but bleached 2" head of hair? i assume/read that i will have to wait until my hair is 4" long...

oh man, March already. I'm so anxious for some warm sunny weather I can't describe it. Naturally we got snow over the weekend. Just Mother Nature reminding me who's incharge I guess.

Welcome Joanne. There was a photo of a guy, I think on Knotty boy or someplace similar, that had very short hair. What it looked like he did was seperate his hair and use rubber bands at the root & tip without backcombing. Then it looked like he just did nothing except the "root rub" to get the growing hair to dread. I noticed with my DE's that my roots began to create little dreads just from being rubbed naturally & not combed for 4 months. This guy did look really funny for a while, sort of like that eraser head guy, LOL. This might work for your hair thought & you wouldn't have to wait for your hair to grow to at least get it started. It'll still take a while to get full fledged dreads, but they always take some time.

So here's a Q for everyone. Do you have "pretties" in your hair? I just put in my first bead the other day. I found it in a package at the craft store, it was the only one with a hole big enough to fit, but it is also the prettiest of the bunch so I'm happy. What about you?

Love2All so you're coaching again this year? Very cool Sorry to hear about the learning challenges but at least they know what is going on with your kiddo. My sister was dyslexia and was never diagnosed until she was an adult and it was too late it seemed. It was a lot of turmoil and she almost didn't graduate and I think it was due to the struggle she was having with dyslexia. I hope you find some creative ways to help your kiddo to help make learning fun.

I have some beads in my hair, some hemp cord where I've wrapped a few places, and some bells. I like to keep it festive.

I just found out my in-laws won't be coming to visit this summer. I have mixed emotions about it. I know that my kids would like to see their grandparents but secretly I've seen enough of them and am glad they won't be making the trip. I feel a bit bad about saying that. But, at least we will have a summer where we can do whatever we want rather than having to plan everything around their trip.

Peace,
Shelbi

happy belated B-day Lizzo. Geeze, 18. I hardly remember 18. Hope it's because I had a great decade between then & now. Hope your next 10 are as fun!

Not dread related but I got a new tattoo on Monday. On my arm, below the short sleeve level. I think this hair is making me realize that I'll never be in the "mainstream" so why not embrace it, right?

& the shots right after it was done. That's a really hard spot to photograph! You can see my hair, that makes it dread related, LOL.

okay, i know i'm going to sound like all the people in my raft and at my bar, but chole, how do you wash those? with shampoo? just like normal dreadies? do you have to wash them? are they heavy? they look heavy. mine are pretty long, but i only notice that they are heavy when they are wet and i'm trying to meditate . i think any distraction gets me then . and while i'm playing 20 questions, how do you pronounce your name? sorry . i do feel like one of the people in line at the grocery that keep going....with the questions:

Cohleback- beautiful! I love it and I love the location!
As for pretties- I have a wrap (liek the kind kids get in disney or at the beach) my friend did at my bebe shower last February (or however you spell it...I'm running on fo hours of sleep!). It's black, red, shades pf green and shades of yellow. It had beads, but they fell out long ago. I love it.
I had apeyote stitch I got at a Dead show sometime ago, but that kept falling out as my dreads got tighter and finally, I lost it.
Then I have two glass beads. One from the lovely Nattylockedmama and one I got at a String Cheese show.
I may like more pretties- def another peyote stitch.
Uuuuggghhh thinking of my pretties brings up some saddness. I bought this beautiful beautiful ring at the dead show where I got my peyote stitch. It was so awesome and I stopped wearing it for a while when I was pregnant and then finally on Halloween I wore it and left it in my dad's car b/c we drove somewhere that night and I've never found it. I am bummed. I know it's somewhere, but I need to look

hey mama's! pretty's...let's see, I have one glass bead that I got from a guy for a cig (it's actually a really nice bead)'bout 4 yrs ago, a brass coated plastic bead that has seen better days (been in there from the start, 6 yrs ago), a wrap I've had for 3 yrs, a piece of copper pipe that a frind gave me, also been ther for 6 yrs, a shell that my friend gave me when we cut her dreads a month ago, and a silver ring my great uncle gave me 4 yrs ago. Speaking of pretty's, anyone wanna trade? I love the glass bead, but it only fits on a few dreads, and they are all too long to wear it on, I'm afraid I'm gonna break it on something ( it aready has alot of lil scratches on it) I'll post a pic of at some point soon...

Chole~that tattoo is beautiful, what a neat spot.

I have a bunch of stuff going on on my locks. I did dye the bottoms of them about three years ago, big mistake! I really dont know what I was thinking,, maybe transition? But the color is still there on a couple of them and I don't feel very natural when I notice it. I have two dreads strung up with hemp wraps. One bone bead from a craftsman up in Donner Park I got when I lived in Tahoe five years ago. (speaking of tahoe...riverundine~what shore do you live on? I miss it there). I have a little pink/black peyote stich I made years ago that is falling apart but it is sorta stuck in the knots. I have two glass beads, one gifted at a show and one from my glassblowing dp. And about six months ago I stuck a spring from a broken pepper grinder in one of the dreads in the back and it's still there . that's it. It is hard to not keep waying myself down with glass beads because my man makes so many nice ones. The one I have in right now matches a bracelet he made me too, so it stays. I have a few beads and things that used to be in my locks that I would like to pass on for trade too. I like this topic, I usually never think about whats in my hair, but now I realize I should pay attention to my head today, maybe separate a bit .

oh and how do I post pix?

This is my third set as well and they feel more...permanent for lack of a better word. I really like this set. I have kept them seperated this time and that is the major difference. Mine are still babies but look dreaded and have for awhile now. It doesn't take my hair long to lock up though. The first time I put in a set I was travelling heavily and didn't keep them seperated even though I had all the time in the world. I ended up with like 4 dreads and it was uncomfortable. I am glad that I spent a lot of time thinking about it before I did it this time. I knew what to expect and felt like I needed to think about the reality of what such a haristyle brings into your life. KWIM? Like, the crazy questions, the rude stares, and the flat disgusted look on some people's faces. But, this time I felt like it doesn't bother me as much. Looking good Raven how long have you had them in?

Peace,
Shelbi

ahh, to bad about the hair KElly. Although I'll admit a weakness for shaved heads, just ask my poor SO who hasn't been able to have hair for 10 years )well unless he doesn't mind celabacy, LOL)

I'll get to all those Q's as soon as DD isn't having a break down. "I want to be entertained *sob* *sob*"

Shelbi ~ I have only these for about 3 weeks now (that pic was after about 4 days tho ... will post more recent ones soon).

I didnt do anything like back combing or anything and Im patiently waiting for thr fuzzies to go away but I love the process and the cultivation of patience is actually one of the biggest reasons I decided to do this again.

I totally hear you about the whole commitment thing.. it really is a lifestyle and not just a hairstyle

Kelly ~ I know that you must feel rather upset about such a drastic change. I would feel the same way. My husband (soon to be ex) has really awesome long hair and he told me other day he was thinking of cutting it and I actually started crying. Its hectic! He looks great tho on both pics
