One of my doula clients was told by her OB today that her baby will DIE if she doesn't permit her to induce her next monday. She is 40weeks 2 days today. She is healthy and has no medical problems. She wants a natural birth and does not want an induction. Her doctor is going out of town today and will be back on Saturday. She is hoping to go into labor on her own before then, but she says she wants a different provider to catch her baby if she is still pregnant come Saturday. She is scheduled for an NST on Monday and is sure to get pressure to induce then.
She will be having her baby at Providence Portland. She said maybe with future babies she would want a home birth but right now this is what her insurance will cover. Any one know of any good CNMs or OBs that practice at Providence Portland?
i dont personally, but ia m sure Claudia does... Claud, wanna step in here???
also, maybe suggest some natural ways of getting her labor going, like walking, nipple stimulation, sex sex and more sex.
i had a CNM like her OB and i was so scared, i didnt have a wonderful doula like you to warn me. i was induced at St V's and it ended in cesarian. it could have all been easily avoided.
with the walking maybe she could walk around the block a few times doing curb walking...? did i mention sex?
and spicy foods, sometimes that helps people, sometimes it doesnt.
OMG!!! What a thing to tell a pregnant lady!!! But check here: http://www.oregonmidwifery.org/ORmidwives.htm and that's a list of midwives, too bad I am not one yet or I'd totally help. Good luck and keep us posted how she does!
tiff: actually, i don't know the actual names of the docs my clients at prov portland used. and the only midwives i know practice at st. v's.
Heather, are you on our doulasupport yahoogroup list? it's a bunch of doulas and birth advocates here in the portland area. you can also learn more about our group at our website at www.birthsupportnetwork.orghttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/doulasupport the email list on yahoogroups would probably come up with some names for you, too.
Tiffany, I talked with her about different natural induction techniques yesterday. She visited her accupuncturist this morning before her OB appt so hopefully that'll get things moving.
I can't help you with providers but I'll tell you what I did last Monday to get labor going, just in case this helps her avoid an induction. I was 41 weeks and had been having contractions on and off for a few days. And I think my reason for not going into labor sooner was more psychological.
-massage w/lots of leg and sacrum stim 4 days before labor
-chiro adjustment 3 days before
-stopped taking cal/mag supps which relax muscles (this may be the delusions of an overdue woman, but i figured it wasn't going to hurt anything)
-intercourse every other day (that's all we could manage!), but orgasm every day
-day b4 labor: long walk to the point of feeling lots of cervical pressure
-day of labor: long walk, homeopathic gelsenium (sp?) good for anxiety related to uterine issues (this really helped me get into a good head space). 1 hr at my double electric breast pump, and contractions were strong and regular from then on.
best of luck to your client. i'm so sorry this has happened to her. i hope she knows her OB is crazy and she isn't too scared.
I talked with her today and she said she made some phone calls to some of the providers mentioned here and they all had waiting lists to get in. She doesn't have that long. Hopefully she'll have her baby sooner rather than later.
She's got about a three page list of questions to ask her doctor the next time she goes to visit her.
She knows her OB is not telling the truth to her and is great about keeping herself informed.
She went in for her scheduled NST monday at 41w0d to make sure everything was okay. The doctor came in to see how she was doing in the morning. The doctor was covered head to toe in blood having just done a c/s. My client freaked out and her BP showed her higher than normal. They decided to induce her that day.
I showed up about an hour after she called me. She was in a small exam room and they didn't have an LDR room ready yet. They started the Pit 2 hours after I got there. She got to eat something diring this time. She was doing really well with the ctx. At some point we moved to a LDR room. She labored on her hands and knees and her mom, partner and I took turns rubbing her back. The nurse was having a hard time keeping the external monitor in place. Her doctor came in and ruptured her membranes and put in an internal monitor. After AROM her contractions were intensified, she needed to vocalize during them and it took all her concentration to get through them. We tried lots of different positons because she was having intense back labor. They checked her and she was at 4cms.
She was having ctx with quadrulple peaks and intense back labor. At around 10pm she asked for some IV meds. The first dose helped, I think. Before the 2nd dose they checked her again and she still was at 4cms. Her partner left her so he could go to work. She begged him not to go and he still left. They gave her the second dose and it was not helping. She asked for the epidural. She was very tired and hungry.
The nurse anesthesist did not have the best bedside manner in the world, she seemed very grumpy. At first I sat with her during the administration, but before they got started she asked for her mom and I went outside the room and got her. They checked her immediately after the epidural and she was at about 5.5cms.
The mom got a little bit of sleep. I tried to get some shut eye too, but I didn't sleep much. She slept about a half hour before she told her mom and I that she needed to poop. We called the nurse in to check her. The nurse said she was almost complete. She had dilated 4.5cm in a half hour. The nurse called the dr. We had the mom blow through the contrax while they were getting ready. She was feeling a lot of intense pressure. Finally the dr. showed up. She came over and took one look at the mom and started suiting up. After the doc suited up she told her to go ahead and push. The mom pushed three times and the baby was out. She pinked up right away. Her apgars were 9 and 9. She had a 2nd degree tear from coming out so quickly.
Baby was great 7.4 and 17.5inches long. She was born at 1:42am. Ten minutes after the dr. arrived. The doctor's total time in the room including stitching was 30minutes. The nurses were absolutely wonderful. She took to breastfeeding right away and was doing great when I left at 3:30am.
I think that the mom did really well. I know that back labor is really tough. I think that if it hadn't been posterior (and her partner had stayed, his presence calmed her) she could have easily had her w/out the epidural. They actually turned down the pit once the contractions started going in earnest.
I was just thinking about this mom this AM, too...thanks for posting the update. In the end it sounds like things went okay. I'm glad she's fine and the baby is fine. Make sure she knows to really take it easy for a few weeks!
Weird that her partner went to work! Is he the father?

Yeah he's the father. Apparently he had just got fired from his last job for taking vacation time to visit his sick mother in California. He had a new job and didn't want to risk losing it. I didn't pry any more than that, but I think I may have missed something.

Dr. Anita Chan.
I thought that was kind of wierd too. I do want to give her credit though, this afternoon she came back to check on my client. She was very concerned that the mom had a good support system at home when she left the hospital, because she's a younger mother. I thought that was really nice of her to show such concern. It still doesn't make up for telling her her baby was going to die, but I guess she's not all bad.
