We're organizing a nation-wide nurse-in for Victoria's Secret, and here's a list of VS in Michigan. We're shooting for July 1st, at 1 pm your time zone. If there is more than one in your area, could you pick one of the malls, that way there is a bigger concentration of mamas in the area? (If not, that's cool, I just think it'll be a better effect.) I've put the areas that have more than one VS in red.

(Here's why we're doing a nurse-in)

Are these the only malls where there will be a nurse in? There is a VS at Crossroads Mall in Portage (Kalaamzoo).

"For its part, Victoria's Secret maintains that it supports breast-feeding and its policy actually allows it in stores. "There was an unfortunate misunderstanding in the incident involving us, but you know what, if it's brought forth even greater things, that's fine," said Anthony Hebron, spokesman for parent company Limited Brands in Columbus, Ohio. "

Alright ladies, I was really, really in (2.75 yo nursing toddler and all...), but the above is a quote from the ABC news article. If this is the case, and it wasn't the company itself, but ignorant employees...it this a fair nurse-in? Did the moms ask to speak to management to determine the exact nursing policy (as well as educate management) and still get told to leave? Hate to be a voice of dissention, here, but as lactivists, I think we need to be very careful to be sure of the facts so as not to be simply seen as crazy zealots rather than a group of thinking, educated people with a valid message...

what do you think?

The problem courtenay, is that they aren't communicating this to their employees and I think part of the reason is because they don't see it as a huge issue. But all it takes is ONE employee not knowing. They need to make it a priority to educate their staff. The employee that did this to me wasn't even a NEW employee. So, they aren't making it a priority. I was beyond upset yesterday, holding your crying infant whose obviously hungry and being told you're dirty is ridiculous.

I did speak with the Asst. Manager and she was sorry, but that didn't feed my baby when she was hungry, kwim? That didn't take away the anger and embarrassment that I felt. VS, a company that profits off of breasts, would do well to recognize their main function and respect that in their stores.

The links to the posts about what happened to Snooter and me are posted. Snooter had a wonderful experience when she called management, but I was told that in the future, I would need to go to a dressing room or bathroom by a manager. When I called corporate, they told me that I would have to go to a dressing room or bathroom because they don't allow people to try on clothing on the sales floor. This company has NOT done what it needs to make sure it's employees know their policies about breastfeeding and has been in the news several times for this kind of thing. I feel that this is exactly the kind of thing that will wake them up and realize it's a serious thing to harrass a breastfeeding mother.

Also, can you imagine how badly that would impact a breastfeeding relationship for a new mom? (to be told they were dirty for breastfeeding)

I also wanted to add, that in our case, it also is a state issue. Yes, we are protected federally, but on a state level their isn't much clairity on the issue. Politicians themselves need to see how serious of an issue this is. Fortunately/unfortunately VS might be the catalyst.

Same in WI, we're only protected from prosecution, we don't have the right to nurse where we would otherwise legally be allowed to be.

'kay. In that case, we'll be there. I just wanted to be sure that we weren't gonna look like the fanatics with the big corporation, in the "placating voice" saying..."We SAID you can nurse in our stores, what's the big deal?"

Don't get me wrong...I AM a fanatic about breastfeeding...however, I don't think that fanaticism will win us the nursing mamas from mainstream america, know what I mean? And those mamas are the ones we want to address, in my opinion. We want the mainstream mamas to realize that there's something unnatural about choosing to bottlefeed for no other reason but that it's "dirty" UGH!

I totally understand what you mean Courtenay, and if I had gotten an apology from the manager, I would have stopped at that and been fine. It's that at the management and corporate level they were saying such stupid things that ticked me off.

Just checking in to find out how everyone is coming along with this? Have you contacted other moms in your area? Any estimates ( I know it's still early, but keep us updated!) as to how many will be there?

Okay, so we have Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and wherever I end up -- probably Midland/Saginaw as a few moms in my group have already responded. Can ya'll spearhead calling your local playgroups/LLL's to spread the word? I also contacted the Birthcenter in Okemos/East Lansing last night via email -- we'll see how that goes -- that would be the Meridian Mall.

According to the big thread, the time is 1pm on the 1st. I think we will be getting a blanket statement to hand out to press...

The closest VS to my location is at Lakeside Mall-Sterling Heights or Birchwood-Port Huron, and possibly anywhere in Metro Detroit. July 1st isn't a good day for me, as it's Canada Day and we have plans to sell at a festival. Sunday July 2nd or Monday July 3rd might work for me. If anyone else can go on one of those days, I can meet you there.

Thanks for the plug for my Nurse Out Michigan Yahoo group. I have approved the patiently waiting new members.

Putting up a poll tomorrow for local malls so we can gather together. Please post you're preferred mall to the Yahoo group listed in the previous post in this thread.

Michigan really needs more press on this matter. The Ann Arbor Y event has faded from the press, but we are still being told to do it like bottle moms. (northridge Church still maintains that breastmilk in a bottle is a biohazard.

Ridiculous! Do people really believe that God would consider the food he created for us to feed our children to be unsafe? The ridiculous attitudes "Christians" have about childrearing, nursing, etc. are most of the reason I'm having such a hard time finding/being comfortable in a church.

I'm up for Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor.

Has anyone contacted the local Ann Arbor LLL groups? I haven't been to a meeting in almost a year since the time is so bad for my work schedule.

Well, we're in luck! I have a friend who's an anchor at Fox News in Detroit and they want to cover it. They would like people willing to do interviews, they want to know who's spear-heading the effort here in Michigan, and I'm getting the press release to her, as well.

She mentioned getting some story done before the actual nurse-in, to get more support and more people to show up, so we need to work very quickly. Who's in charge here, and who wants to be on camera? Can I see a show of hands?
