Hi Chrissy,

We are out there, just busy getting ready for winter I guess. Not sure where you are located in the city but some places you may want to check out IRL that have cool moms (including some MDCers) are the Wednesday morning Breastfeeding BUddies program at Klinic on Portage from 10 to 11:30 (drop in at any point), or LLL meetings (there's 2 or 3 groups in Winnipeg - info is available at http://groups.lllc.ca/groups.php?prov=MB). There's also a new NINO group starting up, led in part by another MDC mom. NINO stands for Nine in, Nine out and is a babywearing advocacy organization. You can check out the NINO website at http://www.nineinnineout.org/ and the specific one for Winnipeg at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/winnipegnino/ And finally, there was a thread a while back that mentioned that on Thursday afternoons, some AP parents hang out at Mondragon. I haven't been there for a while so I don't know if that's still going on.

Hope to see you around!

Cheers,
Edwina

It's so pretty! I took my dog out for a walk an hour ago. The wind was a bit much though. I agree, it would have been nice for it to have waited a few days.
My boys loved going in the back yard and playing this afternoon. Now they are chuggin' back the hot cocoa!

Well I'm at home sick with the flu, so the snow was perfect timing - I certainly had no desire to go out today. And DH was able to come home early from work, so that was good too, as poor DD did not have a very mobile mommy to play with.

Chrissy - as for the NINO Group - we are just starting out and are pretty small yet. I think we have 7 or 8 members. We've had 3 informal meetings at Erin W's house, which is in Crescentwood. She's one of the co leaders and a mama on MDC. It's pretty far for you, especially if you are without a vehicle, but you might want to join anyway, as we may have meetings at other locations in the future. Some place like the Forks might be more accessible for you (I'm not sure - I take the bus but I'm in Osborne Village so I don't know what it's like out in Transcona). So far the meetings have been an opportunity to get to know each other, chat, hang out, try out some of each other's carriers and learn about new carries and carriers.

Hey there

My name is Phoebe and I'm in Wolseley.

Jury's still out for DS and me on the snow - pretty, yet cold. DD has no further questions - cold. yuck. NOOOOOOOOOO. lol
For me I'm rethinking the whole Halloween thing - I'm totally up for the event and all but our original plan to trek out to St.Vital Mall (yuck) to collect candy that I have no intention of allowing my two year old to consume is seeming kind of like a goat rodeo recipe for disaster. Maybe we'll stay home and give the candy away? How do parents get through this holiday??? (and still get everyone to bed so that the next day isn't shot?)

As for NINO - we've gone to two of the meetings and found the other women to be super helpful and enjoyed trying on a couple of different carriers that I'd never seen before. Pretty small group, but new and growing.

I'd love to connect with some other MDC moms in Winnipeg.

Hi Edwina, sorry to hear about the flu.

Hey Heather.

Bye for now,

I love the first official snow fall
Last night I threw DD in our fleece wrap and we went for a walk with the dogs. We all loved it, DD hates being covered though so she kept fighting to look over the fur collar of my jacket. By the time we got there we were white. However I truely hate winter and am sick of it already
DH hurt his back today shoveling snow, so I wonder who had to finish it
:

As for the NINO meeting I am strongly considering it. I have a car but I do work so it all depends. Plus we're really busy right now, once it calms down I would be very interested.

I love Halloween! DD is going in her wrap tonight and she has a hood with long bunny ears and a matching bib with the boddy of a bunny so she can wear it in the wrap and everyone can still see her costume.

Oh and I'm sorry to hear that the flu is getting to some people. I work in a daycare so I have super immunity by now, it makes up for the 6 weeks of constant sickness when I started.

Anyways I'm glad us Winnipeggers finally have a gathering point but I have to go.

OK, that's it I'm changing this thread to Manitoba Moms (Thanks by the way manitobamom) becuase being a small town girl at heart there is no way I'm excluding anyone, and now that I think of it me and DH like to travel so if connections are made maybe we can start with shorter road trips and build our way up. Plus just becuase it is all on province there are diversities in the people communities, and landscapes across Manitoba that would be interesting to poke into. So welcome one and all.

this isn't the best place to be if you want a specific type of doc with the right attitudes & opinions. you'll be lucky if you find anyone who is accepting new patients. at least, that's my experience. i had connections so i got a doc (a gp, not a ped) for my son a year ago, but i have a friend who only recently found a doctor for her son. he turns 1 soon.
i'd recommend being assertive and doing your homework before visiting the doctor, rather than expecting much. it sucks that it's this way.

Run far, far away from Dr. Lazar in the medical arts building. Besides the recent wrong baby circ'd and he tried to cover up debacle, his bf attitudes are the worst! He encourages exclusive 6month, but, according to him, anything after that is "psychologically damaging". And to break some privacy laws went on to explain one of his "patients" who bf her ds until, gasp! 3 years of age and there was many mental problems in the family b/c of it. That and he's quite condesending too.

In the same group of 4, however, Dr. Carson was very nice. We only saw him a very small handful of times (last min appt with sick kids) and he would actually listen to you. He took your concerns seriously, even if he didnt think that was the problem. Very respectful.

That being said, I just switched all my kids to my family doc. If there's anything more serious going on with them then my doc can refer to a specialist. I like that my kids wil have a doc forever now - no getting kicked out at 18 and starting from scratch.

Theres a phone # you can call to find out what drs are accepting new patients....I'll find it for you....

There was some threads prior to this for Winnipeg that mentioned peds and Dr. Rajani and another one were recommended (if you search for Winnipeg in tribal areas, you'll likely come up with it). We have Dr. Rajani and we've only seen him once. He didn't give us any grief over our decision to delay/selectively vax, but really all he did was weigh, measure and check for clicks in the hips.

We recently saw Dr. McDougall (not sure of spelling) at Manitoba Clinic and did not like him at all. I would avoid him if at all possible.

In discussing this with friends, it seems pretty hard to find one at all, and especially one who's supportive of AP practices. I would ask your midwives for recommendations - they can also help you get a ped - I got into Dr. Rajani by namedropping one of the many midwives I saw during my pregnancy.
