i just started reading a older book by donald ******...."blue like jazz." anyone read it? comments? i've read mixed reviews but so far i think it's wonderful! i love his writing style.
I'm checking in and subbing. I've decided to CD with DD and am in a research diaper haze right now- any suggestions would be much appreciated. She's 26lbs and 8 months, a bit on the taller/longer end of the spectrum with super chunky thighs and a really long crack in the back!
On another note, do you or DH go on womens/mens retreats? DH just got back from one this weekend through our church, I've always wanted to go but never was able to b/c of grad school conflicts and now I don't leave my babies yet. If you've gone, do you come back feeling different?
You know, I have not been on any type of retreat in at least 15 years.
I just have never had the time. Of course, I have been pregnant or nursing a baby almost that entire time!
My husband has also not been on many. Actually, only one in that time. And I can't say that he really came back different (but he has always been a "serious" Christian, so what can I say). But he did seem to enjoy it.
But I do know that the times that we have had special meetings and such at the church I have always left feeling more committed and "on fire". So I am guessing I would have the same feelings to a retreat.
Perhaps some of the others here have a better answer.
hi there!
What's a crunchy Christian momma? I'm a Christian and have been posting on the cancer survivor thread. Saw the name and just wondered what you are all about.
Blessings!

"Crunchy Christian Mamas" are just Christians that are pretty "crunchy" (and of course "mamas"). No real other special definition.

stephanie- i think that i may be following you around mdc.
my dh was really into donald ****** so he got me into it. i read it and the other one...forgot the name. then, i gave dh "through painted deserts" for christmas. I really like his style, too. i read parts of it out loud to dh when we were driving and we laughed so much. his honestly and realness is so inspiring. i really liked reading about his experiences at reed college. one of my fave parts though is when he lives in the woods with the hippies and then goes to be a camp counselor and they ask him to shave. he asks them questions like, "who are your people?" and they hand him a razor and tell him to shower. sooooo funny!!!
now, i will go reply to you on all the other threads i have seen you on lately.

it is funny to see the same names on the threads i visit. makes me wish you lived near me because it's obvious we have much in common!
i haven't gotten to don living in the woods with the hippies yet but i'm just getting through his years at reed. i used to be able to read a book like this in a few days but with 2 kiddos, one on the way, pursuing my doula/CBE cert & other silly life commitments....i'm a very slow reader!
one comment regarding an earlier post i made here. i asked for prayers to be non-judgemental re: a woman i recently met at a church group. we both recently moved to the area & she was obviously looking for friends in a big way but each time we got together i felt "turned off" by her. we have many different parenting views & lifestyle views in general. so...we're now in the same bible study group & she brought up "blue like jazz" this past week! it was so coincidental that i had just started reading it & we were able to chat about it afterwards. she shared quite a bit about her struggles with being a believer during her college years & all of a sudden i felt like she was more real & down to earth & i could relate! these are the times when i'm compelled to keep a prayer journal to keep track of how God answers prayer in my life! it's really quite amazing....
It is nice when you can find that common ground to walk on. That can make all the difference in any relationship. I am glad that you found some. It is nice to have Christians IRL that you can talk to.
Jumping in. It's been so long since I've posted on any of the CCM threads. I think it would be a good idea to start some discussion to help us all reacquaint with each other.
i think we've found a church! we've been searching since we moved last spring but haven't been able to find the right fit. this morning we visited a mennonite church & absolutely loved it! kermit & i felt so at home in so many ways & knew instantly that we were in the right place. we actually searched for a mennonite church after i read the book "living more with less" and was inspired by the simple ideas & strong morals. i just wanted to share this with you all......
i hope this doesn't spark a denominational debate because this isn't the intention. we've enjoyed church hopping, to be honest, because we thoroghly enjoy meeting christians of all types & worshiping in various ways. it feels good, though, to be (fairly) confident that we can settle down for a while with a group of believers & grow!

Wow, I have read the book called "Living More With Less" and loved it! Very inspiring for crunchy/socially concious Christians. I was really impressed as a whole by their thinking on green issues and on social justice. Glad you found a home!
doulalove: I think we're long lost sisters! You and I are at similar spots with thinking about God and His part in birth and it made me so happy to know I'm not the only one who thinks this is birth has the opportunity to be a wonderful, Spirit-filled experience that's coming up. Then you turn out to be a Mennonite wannabe too. While we're extremely happy at our non-denominational church I feel closest to the Mennonites denomination-wise and if we ever move DH wants to try their church before another non-denom. It would be another interesting twist in our lives. I never imagined my bad boy rockstar BF from high school turning into a baby-wearing Mennonite.
Jules: The word crunchy here is board slang for "natural living" or at least "natural living wannabe". For instance: DH and I try to eat only organic and fair trade stuff but aren't very good at it and I love scented body lotions but they still let me hang out here (though I've been lurking due to m/s) even though these are pretty non-crunchy characteristcs about me and I'm not officially a mama yet. On the crunchy side we do try to use natural bath products and food and are planning a homebirth. If you post anywhere on this forum you're probably considered crunchy so feel free to join us!!

Regardless of the denomination, it's important to find the church that is right for you. I am glad for you to have found that!!! We're kinda struggling with our current church situation, but i don't really even want to ramble on about it here. We're sticking there for now though. We hope to be able to live abroad for a little while and maybe that will bring some clarity for us.
We are close family friends to a mennonite family in pa. We got to attend the daughter's baptism at their church and it was such an honor.

one of the first things my husband & i said to each other about the mennonite church was that our children will have the choice of baptism. we both grew up "dunkards" but have been attending churches that practice infant baptism. it's been completely fine.... even though we requested dedication ceremonies for our daughters as opposed to baptisms....but when you go back to your roots, it feels like a breath of fresh air!

you're too funny...bad boy rockstar turned baby-wearing mennonite! that's quite a visual.
when are you due, arelyn? i need to continue focusing on the Holy Spirit being present during this pregnancy & childbirth because it's oh, so easy to lose sight of that! i'm giving birth at home for the first time & doubt & fear creep up easily if i don't surrender it all to Him!

We're expecting baby in early September though we're technically due in late Aug. I was a week+ late so I'm expecting baby to do likewise. We are having a homebirth though I'm not sure how the details will work out. We don't have a homebirth midwife, only a hospital midwife with a high c-sect rate and a focus on hypnobirth that I'm a little uncomfortable with. The only other option is an OBGYN who quit working at the hospital due to hypocracy and now attends homebirths. He is a man though and I'm totally opposed to having a male seeing me unclothed, much less touching me. He's ok with attending a "UC" and hanging out in the other room just in case. We'll probably go this route though it seems a shame to pay that much money just to have a guy chilling out in the livingroom.
And if you think I'm kidding about my husband check out these before and after pictures (put up with his permission, he's proud of the change). The first is at Woodstock 99 when he was 17 (note the Bacardi shirt), the second is this summer in Sri Lanka. Just imagine a baby sling instead of a drum.

i know what you mean about a man attending your birth. i had midwife attended hospital births with my first two & loved them. this hb practice is mostly males & i still feel a little uneasy but i'm going with it. in reality, the nurse will be the one who labors with me & the doc comes at the very end. and....i just found out that many of the nurses catch the baby's, too, with doc standing by. i think this is awesome! (especially since one of my dearest friends just starting working for them as a nurse & i hope she's on call for me!
i love the pics of your hubby, too. i wish i had some before & after of kermit because it would be just as shocking. he used to have waist length hair & quite the...ummm....partier. he still has longish hair but just trimmed his goatee (sp?) into just a beard & he looks sooooo amish/mennonite! it cracks me up.
I am copying and pasting due to limited time at the moment:
I have anther prayer request to ask of you all. My 10 year old son broke his toe this morning. UUGGG! Spending the day in the ER is just no fun at all!
We have an appointment with a specialist first thing in the morning, but we know for sure that he will at least be on crutches for a couple of weeks, it may be more severe, but we won't know for sure until tomorrow. His toe is broke and dislocated, so I don't really know what all that means until I meet with the doctor. He is taking it quite well, and other than his initial excruciating pain, the pain has been tolerable without drugs. I am praying that it will last.
Anyways, prayers again for our family would be greatly appreciated.
to your ds. I am curious what they will say... my mom and I have broken a few toes in our time and all they ever did for us was tape them to another toe!
so sorry about your son, kidzaplenty! a 10 year old on crutches does not sound like fun but i'm glad to hear he's tolerating the pain. i'm praying that the specialist has something positive to say!
