I'm looking for a little help from all of you wise Portland mamas . . . . I want to send gifts to my neices who live in Beaverton, OR. I'd rather send them gift certificates for things they can DO, rather than things they can buy. But, I just don't know for what. My neices are in 3rd grade and 6th grade. We've done OMSI a few times, and I think they are too old for the Children's Museum. Their family already has a membership to the zoo. Any other ideas for really fun pre-teen activities in and around Portland? Your suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks!!

My mom used to take us to those paint your pottery studios and it was always fun. You get to pick a piece of pottery, sit and paint it and then the place will fire it and glaze it and you get to come back and pick up your finished piece. It was so fun! Some of them also offer parties and such where you can invite friends and eat too.

This place has ceramic items for kids to paint and glaze. Then they fire them up to be taken home. Here's the website.

If you can find out what Parks and Rec district they are in (probably Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation District, but I'd check to be sure). You can buy them gift certificates to take classes of their choice which include tons of things from swimming lessons, to dance, to art, camps and others.
