Ever thought about becoming a postpartum doula or lactation educator? Now we have training sessions set up here in Knoxville, so no traveling. (unless you live outside Knoxville that is ). I personally have wanted to do this for a few years now, but didn't want to leave my family and travel out of state for the weekend.

Tennesse now has 2 new CAPPA doula/lactation educator trainers in TN and they are coming to Knoxville. Here is the info for both, if you are interested please contact either the trainer OR me as I am setting it all up (I live in Knoxville). You can just PM or e-mail me with any questions. Space will be limited as the meeting room is not that large, this info will be posted to several moms groups, the birth center and all the local hospitals among other spots. I am posting it here first though.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
CAPPA CLE Program
The purpose of the CAPPA lactation educator program is to provide childbirth professionals comprehensive training in breastfeeding education. When a candidate completes the certification program, they will be qualified to teach and educate the public on breastfeeding and related issues. When all requirements have been satisfactorily completed candidates will be issued the CAPPA credential “ CLE ” Certified lactation educator. This program does not issue lactation consultant status nor will the participant be qualified to sit for the IBCLC exam.

CAPPA’s Position on Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is undeniably best and should be
strongly encouraged. All families should have the opportunity to become educated as to why breastfeeding is best for both mother and baby.
They should also be encouraged to attend a
breastfeeding class and support group while they are still pregnant so that they may make an informed decision about infant feeding. Many
parents, when they become educated, will want to breastfeed, but it is important to recognize that there are many reasons why some cannot or choose not to do so. It is not the place of the Lactation Educator to create guilt surrounding infant feeding, but rather to educate parents so that they may make truly informed decisions. CAPPA supplies the highest quality of training, to ensure that Certified Lactation Educators meet the diverse informational needs of the public.

About the Instructor:

Micky Jones, BS, CLE, CLD, CHBE is the owner of 9 Months & Beyond, LLC in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Her career began when she graduated with honors from MTSU with a degree in Consumer and Family Sciences with emphasis in Child Development and Family Studies. She is a La Leche League Leader, trained childbirth educator, postpartum doula, Certified Lactation Educator, Certified Labor Doula, Certified Happiest Baby Educator and perhaps most qualifying, the mother of 3 young children.

For additional information on this workshop please contact Micky at: [email protected]

I want to do the Lactation Consultant one very VERY badly...I wish DD was more comfortable with other people and not still nursing every hour (sigh). Man,...talk about a HUGE bummer.

I want to be sure moms know that nursing babies are VERY welcome, the trainer will have her own 8 month old nursling there! She wouldn't expect otherwise, sling 'em and nurse 'em . Obviously it would be too long a day for kids who are mobile, but for nursing babies this would be totally fine.

Question for you, Heather.

In looking at CAPPA's page, just attending the conference/workshop does not mean one leaves as a CLE, correct?

Those attending still would be required to get two letters of reccomendation, do the reading (4 books), file a resume, take the pre-test, attend 4 LLL meetings, attend a consultation with another educator, review and write essays on current research studies, and take the open-book test... yes?

Does the total class fee include these fees:
$45.00 Membership fee
$35.00 Certification Packet
$75.00 Certification Processing Fee?

I would love to attend for knowledge sake, but I want to make sure that if I decide to complete the certification process it's something I can manage right now. Is there any limit on time between the workshop and submitting other materials/sitting for the exam?

If DD werent so high maintenance, it wouldnt be so scary. She is just VERY demanding, and I know she wouldnt just sit there quietly for more than about 20 minutes.

I guess all I can do is hope (and pray!) that this is offered later this year or next year sometime.

Anna-

I e-mailed Micky, the CLE trainer and here is what she wrote. She is a super cool lady who will help ANYONE out with this process.

"She is right, the certification process includes more than just the
workshop. The workshop is part of the process (unless you are doing the
distance certification). I do not know of any "certifications" that you get
at the end of just attending a workshop. All require a test, proctored exam
and/or other steps.

If she got the information from the CAPPA website, it is correct. It all
looks correct to me. Those fees are IN ADDITION TO the workshop fee. They
can become a member before or during the workshop and they can get the
certification packet at the workshop. The Certification processing fee is
not paid until they send in their packet. The CAPPA membership is comparable
to other organizations - just to join LLL these days is $40. It is actually
quite low for a professional membership. Membership includes a FREE East
Coast and FREE West Coast Convention and Conference each year. With all the other certifying bodies, the conference has an ADDITIONAL fee. So you
have a conference registration fee, lodging, travel, food, etc PLUS your
yearly membership fee, and certification fees. With CAPPA, you have your
membership fee but the conference truly is free (you still pay lodging and
travel and food but you pay that anyway unless it is in your hometown). I
have been to 2 conferences and it really is free.

You have 2 years to finish your certification which is complete when you
send in the documentation and writing for all your requirements and your
answers to the OPEN book test. It is open book to prove you know how and
where to get the answers, not that you know everything. The clock starts
ticking when you either take the workshop or buy your cert packet, whichever
comes first. This is to insure that your knowledge is current when your CLE
is awarded. If it has been more than 2 yrs since you started the process,
your info might be out of date. She will be able to get through in two
years, it is plenty of time and I would be happy to help anyone map out
their process before, after or during the workshop.

Let me know if you have any more questions or need any more clarification.

I hope this helps!

Do you know if there is still room, esp for the post-partum doula? I am considering both, but monetary restrictions might limit me to one---

Mama to ds 6/00 and dd 1/09
