9 AM to 3 PM
Giant Silk Moths and Sow Bugs
9:00am SASI's gate off Gates Pass Rd. opens
9:15 - 10:15am Nature Walk Beautiful Tucson Mountain Park should be at its peak of plant and animal activity. We will walk towards the Tucson Mountains and explore.
10:30 - 11:30am Giant Silk Moths of Arizona
Well known naturalist and author, Michael Wilson, will talk about these spectacular and seldom seen arthropods. He may even bring some beautiful caterpillars.
12:00 - 1:00pm Potluck Lunch - Bring a dish to share
(Don't worry if you can't, we'll still feed you!)
12:00 - 3:00pm Activity Tables Features will include live caterpillars and butterfly eggs.
1:00 - 2:00pm Live Arthropod Presentations - Emily Francis and John Rhodes will show arthropods from the SASI collection. Young vinegaroons and praying mantises raised at SASI will be shown. This is the time of year to see the active and interesting Longhorn Cactus Beetles. We will have some for you to see. This demonstration is appropriate for all ages.
2:00 - 3:00pm Playing and Experimenting with Sow Bugs
A workshop by John Rhodes and David Kha
Sowbugs, Oniscus asellus, are terrestrial crustaceans that are common in back yards around Tucson. These are fun to play with and study. Behavioral experiments will be the focus of this workshop. We will have everything you need to get to know sowbugs, and to take home a habitat for them if you wish. This workshop is appropriate for all ages.
