I'm Grayson, an American from NC in the US, married to my Dutch DH and living in Eindhoven. We have three kids (soon to be four), all born in the US (we moved to NL in 2002).

This next birth will be my first homebirth (yay!). Right now I'm looking around for an "earthy" midwife. I'm worried that most midwives here are part of the mainstream medical system and view pregnancy birth as a natural but still medical process that must be managed.

I read the consultatiebureau thread with great interest. We may just skip that altogether . We do delayed partial vax, so we won't need them for that for a few years. And I definitely don't need any basic advice at this point in the game.

Because #4 is a surprise 7 years after #3, I no longer have *anything*, so I'll probably be picking your brains in the coming months on where to find cloth diapers, nursing pads, etc.

Congratulations and Welcome!
When I was pregnant I went to a few prenatal yoga sessions in the Netherlands. The yoga instructor was pretty crunchy and she knew of all of the available midwives in the area, including one local midwife who would only attend water births at home.

Ditto the prenatal yoga. She cloth diapered and was an extended nurser too. Definitely in the know about AP.
It was easy to pick a midwife practice when I found out that all of my midwives were extended nursing mamas which is NOT the norm in NL.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask and welcome to MDC.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I'll have to check into prenatal yoga around here. Is it really yoga (as opposed to just stretching)? That sounds pretty good.

I've found a couple of midwife practices around here that look good. One in particular looks promising. I'm only at 4 wks, so I'm not ready to go rushing over there yet , but I'm getting my questions together so I can see if they're a good fit.

Welcome!!

Yeah, I had one of those medicalized midwife practices--you're very smart to look closer for an earthy group!
