Feminist. I can see how the definition for this will be very broad, but I'll start it off simply. I believe a feminist is a person (male OR female, yes I do believe that men can be feminists) who believes that women should always have a level playing field with men, whether in the home, the workplace, sports, ext., be treated equally in all respects, have the same choices and priveleges that men have, and have the right to pursue all of these and more without the fear of discrimination or repercussions. That definition is VERY simplified. The feminist movement is so much more broad than that and can encompasses so much more, and still has a ways to go even in today's world. While today's women have many more choices, priveleges, and oppurtunities than woman even thirty years ago did, there are still many women doing the same work as men who are being paid less simply because they are women, and misogyny still exists in many subtle or even extreme ways.

Heck ya! I didn't respond on the other thread because it got way too long before I found it and I had nothing more of substance to contribute to what had been said.

So glad that you are all here!

Angelpie, I think that is a great definition. I like simplicity.

So anyhow, the other thread is...infuriating to me (my own fault, I just come to a place where my understanding mechanism shuts down).

Does anyone have a local NOW chapter? If you don't have you thought of starting one?

I have a local chapter, but I am not involved in it. My feminism doesn't really mesh with NOW's feminism. I am a member of some national organizations, but NOW isn't one of them.

Our closest is 20 miles, which is kind of far considering I live in the burbs of Los Angeles. The land between here and there is populated shoulder to shoulder.

My small UU congregation is in the process of creating a local UUWF chapter.

Can you say more about this, please?

I'm not a member of anything. I just run around causing trouble online.

I'm not a member of anything, but I WANT to be. I read Feministing.com every day, and while I disagree with a lot of commenters, it makes me want to actively take part in something.

Sure.

Basically, NOW isn't radical enough for me, and they have made some choices I really can't agree with. For example, they have a tendency to support male Democratic candidates for office regardless of their women's rights histories. I also find NOW to be less class-oriented than I'd like, and US-centric. While I am not by any means against NOW, they are not an organization with which I chose to affiliation myself or to whom I dedicate my time.

Nationally, I am a member of the Feminist Majority Foundation, as well as the National Women's Law Center. I'm also a supporter of the Lilith Fund and am somewhat involved in a local domestic violence shelter. The majority of my feminist group activity, however, is online.

I feel the same way about most large feminist organisations - for me, class and race have to be a big consideration and is oftentimes lacking in the NOW brand of feminism... I'm not, however, interested in any kind of divisiveness or argument because I can see the role that such orgs play is valuable - I just don't think they play hard enough.

PS. I realise that I'm in Australia where NOW doesn't exist - but I've been an active feminist and keen observer of NOW for many years and feel like I have a fairly good understanding of the whole picture.
