for those of you who saw my previous thread DH got the job and they want him out there in 3 weeks. me and the kids aren't going anywhere until at least July/August. DH will most likely be living at a extended stay hotel for a while. the company will be setting him up with an real estate agent to find housing. from the previous suggestions i think i'd like to stick to the Decatur area. we'll be renting an apartment or house for now. i've got some questions. here it goes,
vaccinations- my mom did some research and said GA doesn't let you do regelious exemption for schooling. DS is not fully vaxed and DD has never been vaxed. is there any hope for us? she was also concerned about finding a doctor that will see my children without their vaccinations.
housing- any apartment complexes, rental agencies, real estate agents i should avoid? any that you recommend? we would like a 2+bdr, 2 bath, with washer and dryer, gas stove and hopefully storage available on site for around $1000 a month. does that sounds plausible?
organic/natural resources- i did a search and saw that there are both Whole Foods and T.J.'s with in 10 miles of DH's work place. are there any other store/markets that sell organic foods close by? any good local/seasonal markets?
last but not least, would any of you care to be my friend?
i will know no one out there and DH will be working a lot. i'm really quite and shy at first but will warm up quickly if you start the conversation. i come with two really cute kids and i can cook.
I'm not too familiar with that part of town b/c I live wayyyy north of teh city. But I know that you can sign a religious exemption for non-vax here in GA. I've never been
, but FWIU the DeKalb Farmers Market is close to you and awesome. I think there a few vax frinedly peds near you, you might want to search here on MDC for teh recs. You also might want to look into attending a LLL meeting, I think there are a few groups in your area. HTH
Religious vax exemption is not a problem here. Well, not a problem if you are ok with a white lie. I would prefer a philosphical exemption, but what can ya do. I have had no problems with the public school and a private preschool. Now finding a supporting ped is a bit trickier, but I dont think you will have any issues with the schools.
yay!! i'm glad to hear about the excemption for vax's. i wonder where my mom found that info? maybe she was trying to scare me from going. i can't blame her. she's going to miss her grandbabies.
Come on down! We're a friendly bunch! We have a really active API group. Although it's based a bit north of the city, there are some Decatur mamas in the group.
I'm really happy with out new pediatrician: Dr. howland-sells at Intown Pediatrics: http://www.intownpediatrics.com/ We are doing delayed and selective vax for DS, and she didn't ask any questions or pressure at all. She wanted us to consider one vax we were declining, and she said something like, "I think you should consider it. i'll give you the insert to read, and if you chose to do it we can do it at his next appt." I appreciated that she expressed her opinion without pressure or judgement, and clearly left the decision in my hands. She listened to my reasons without judgement. Plus, I felt very listedned to and respected, and have never had a wait at all. It's a few miles away (near the zoo), but not hard to get to.
I think you;ll be able to find a place within your budget. There are places above, but it's not unreasonably low.
There's a weekly organic market in downtown decatur on Wednesday evenings. I think it is year-round, and there are other seasonal local markets around town (Morningside and in Peidmont park). Your Dekalb Farmer's Market is the most reasonable place to buy organic locally - much better prices than other stores, plus they have a great hot food line/salad bar so it's a great place to eat lunch with the kids (DD, DS and I eat there for about $5-6). There are also loads of CSA's in the area you can join in the fall or spring, if you are into that.
I'm excessively busy most of the time, but happy to work out a playdate once you move to town! Are you planning to send youd DS to a public kindergarten? If so, get DH househunting sooner than later so you can get enrolled
Hello,
I think most people are answering your questions. But I just moved to Decatur from Sf last July. I don't know many people yet either. I have a 5 and half month old boy. I'd LOVE to meet up with you when you get to town, and give you any tips I've learned of the area.. pm me and I'll give you my phone number.
Best of luck with the move!!
Krista
