OKay it's me again with yet another question and I did search the old links and got lots of great info there...but I haven't seen any threads on this.

What are the crunchy schools there? I'm not sure if we can afford private schools but I want to at least look at them...but also if there are public elementaries that have a more "alternative" vibe to them we'd be interested in finding out about that.

I so don't want to move to a neighborhood with a great house but then we have to drive across the city to get the kids to school - so I'm just trying to look ahead

What are the cool schools you guys know or have heard about?
tia

This is like my dream high school to teach at -- http://www.griffinschool.org/

BUT, I don't know anything about the elementary schools, since I'm secondary ed and don't have any kids yet. Maybe you could always call that high school and ask for recommendations in the area?

I haven't done a whole lot of investigating yet since my dd is only 14 months old, but I know Austin does have:
A Waldorf school
An international School
A Girls' School
Montessori Schools--Here's the one closest to me
An EcoSchool
There is a new homeschool coop in my area too for 4 1/2 - 8 year olds.
Austin has a very active homeschooling community if that's anything you'd want to consider.

This page has a list of Texas charter schools by city. There are quite a few listed for Austin, but I haven't heard anything about any of them.

You may also want to try joining the AustinMamas yahoo group. It's very active and the mamas there can be really helpful about things like schools, pediatricians, etc.

the eco shcool is wonderful. they play the game of village every wensday. it is a cool thing where they build a peep (a 3 in person) who developes a job and a live in a tiny village. they use it to learn math, job skills, social interaction, differant types of building, etc. it is south central.

I haven't heard much about the discovery school lately but I have known several of the teachers there who are cool people. it is in far east austin (almost out of austin).

mom to four lively children. birth and postpartum doula. midwifery student. choosing to enjoy life. :
