Anyone live in McMinnville, Oregon or near it? I've heard good things about it, and am really interested in Oregon. Would like to put some distance btwn my family and me and this seems like a nice distance. i heard it rains, but no snow. we have almost 9 months of snow here and just would like a break from it. Thanks for any info.
Well, I've only been there once and thought it was really beautiful. It's small and in a really nice area of Oregon between Portland and the coast. I'd say you'd find lots of fresh air and good produce. I don't know what the community is like, but on the outside it looks like a great little town.
Oregon has no state sales tax but the property taxes are outrageous to make up for it. Better to live near the border but not in Oregon, so you can drive a short ways for no sales tax but avoid the property taxes.
I live in McMinnville. Personally, I'd rather be in Portland, but I lived there for 8 years and it feels like "home". But Mac (as the locals say) has endeared itself to me and I like it here enough for now. It has a lot to offer, for a small city. A very strong Buy Local ethic and fantastic independent options for groceries and books and toys and movie rentals. Lots of parks, no traffic. Excellent farmer's market and cute downtown ("Oregon's favorite main street", they say). 45 minutes to Portland and about the same to the beach (the mid-way point, along hwy 18 from Portland to the coast). Nice people. Like me!
It's sweet to visit, but not big enough to support the tech jobs that my hubby needs. We are in Portland and have visited McMinnville three times. It's nice.
thanks for all the replies! We heard about it at a yard sale from a lady that lived here her whole life and her and her family are moving there. Just found it on vacation when they went off of I-5. I just found out it's almost 8 hrs away though, i thought it was 6. So i don't know now if we'll go Monday when the hubby is off. I found an old hotel for only $55 a night!! That seems insanely cheap to me! But it looked really nice. it's in downtown. McMenamins Hotel Oregon. It's a shared bathroom, but still seems really cheap! Anyway, looks so pretty i hope we can find a way to get up there, or at least stay half way for the night and drive the rest. we have to drive while ds is sleeping so we would normally do a long drive like that at night. But that would be all night! Maybe we'll find a cute coffee shop!! =)
Quick Question:
Is the rain overwhelming??
i think i'd prefer it to the snow. No shoveling!! But ds loves to be outside, which is one reason were thinking of leaving. does it rain all day all the time in the winter, or does it clear up in the afternoons sometimes??

Right now my hubby is a correctional officer at the county jail in the next town over, I wonder if there's employment like this there?
Well, mcminnville isn't right off I5 which could be an issue for some people...it takes a bit of non-highway driving to get to Portland or salem, the two closest bigger cities. To get to mcm from the 5 means heading west on some small country highways...usually for a half hour or more.
There is a prison there and I have done births for people in McM and also Sheridan that worked for the prison. Sheridan is further west and much longer to get to from the 5.
Well I love the fact that there is a midwife available in that area!! I'm having a problem finding one to do homebirth where i'm at now. (not pregnant yet, i just know i can't go to the hospital again!) Thanks for the info about the prison.
have family there and have loved it when we visit.
