But the girl admits she "panics and cries" when babies are unwell and does not feel able to bathe them.
Quote:
She told the Sun: "I didn't think I'd get pregnant because it was my first time. But I'm really excited and looking forward to being a mum.

"I can't wait to take the baby swimming and out for walks in the pram. I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers.

"I know how to feed a baby its bottle and I can change nappies. But I panic and cry if they're sick and I don't like giving them a bath because I'm a bit frightened.
Quote:
"It's good to know I'll have my mum here to help me if I need her."

She said: "I can give up smoking at any time, but I don't find it affects my pregnancy."
Whatever y'all are thinking, I'm probably there too. I just read this and couldn't find appropriate words.

You see these types of girls on MAURY in the US. I'm surprised it's newsworthy in the UK.

I went to school with a girl who had her first in 7th grade (and a total of 4 by the time she graduated high school). Amazingly, she just got her masters degree and is going for a PhD.

My DH has an aunt who had her first child at 12.

I had a friend who had 3 children by the time she graduated hs. She was an awesome mom.

I read some of the replies to the article. So sad that people can only think to blame the girl's mother, and not think anything of the poverty that surrounds them.

Even the best mother cannot always protect her children from the problems that come with living in poverty.
At least she is supportive of her child and did not kick her out into the streets.

RIP Sidney Mahkuk, 11 year old killed by cocaine.

Where in the article does it say they were living in poverty?

Here's another story about the girl:
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/13052006/35...baby-plea.html
Looks like they are threatening to take her baby away...
Quote:
She told the newspaper: "I just need the chance to prove myself - I know I can be a good mum.

"I've been told by social workers there's a chance the baby won't come home with me from the hospital. They say our house is too small and needs redecorating.

"I'm willing to do whatever it takes to keep my baby, I don't know how I'd cope if I lost it."

Wow. Um, wow. I think she will need some serious help after the baby is born. If she already has a very hard time around crying babies, add in post partum depression, colicky baby, etc.. and that can make shaking a baby really easy.
I just don't know what to say. I hope she's not drinking as well as smoking a pack a day.

Wow, that's amazing. Did you know her family too? What happen to her and the baby? Did she deliver vaginally?

Apparently, it was her own father who got her knocked up. I have no idea what happened to her or her baby. This was well over 20 years ago. There were no hospitals, not even a clinic, so, chances are she had her baby at home, breastfed, etc. like all the other mothers.

That poor girl. She's got a long hard road ahead of her.

I don't think they have a right to try and take her baby cause of her age. MAybe she should stop using her money to support her smoking habit though and "redecorate"(i am assuming they mean repair) the house instead. jeez

As a doula for teen mothers, the youngest mother I had was 12 yrs old. Got pg when she was 11 by a 24 year old man, and, no, he is not in jail.

That's a great story! She must have had so much emotional/practical support to continue school while mothering four kids. I'm sure it has not been an easy road, but that's some perseverence!

this whole thread just breaks my heart. the idea that someone, drunk or not, would have sex with an 11 year old is appalling. And even worse is the same idea that a man (or boy) would have sex with a 5 YEAR OLD, regardless of whether she happened to have breasts!!
It just makes me want to

Actually, she was 5 years, 7 months, so she still would have been 4 when she conceived, which is even nastier!
