DUBLIN, Ireland - Irish archaeologists Tuesday heralded the discovery of an ancient book of psalms by a construction worker who spotted something while driving the shovel of his backhoe into a bog.

The approximately 20-page book has been dated to the years 800-1000. Trinity College manuscripts expert Bernard Meehan said it was the first discovery of an Irish early medieval document in two centuries.
Evidently it's archeology day in SirPentor Land. 800-1000 years old? So cool.

The link I read in yahoo said the owner of the bog has been very open to helping with this sort of find. Thanks be to that eagle eyed dozer driver! The book was opened to Psalm 83.

Which is freaky considering the current middle eastern events.

I'd love to believe the wonder of it all but am I the only one that finds this story maybe a little too fantastic? Then again, it is a holy book : or

Yeah, I thought of that myself. However, they appear to have already done an initial verification of it which indicates that it's valid. And they will continue to do more over the next months and years.
The fact that the owner of the land has been ammenible to archeoly on his land in the past indicates to me this is an area where you could expect to find such things.

A lot of crazy ideas do the rounds there, having lived there for just over 20 years I've heard many in my time.

It is amazing, but honestly, bogs are great at preserving things, and Ireland is a very old country. If you look into the artifacts in the national museaums there, every once in awhile there's a story about it being found by some farmer planting, or how they were in a field no one would touch for centuries because there was a fairy ring.

Artifacts, including biblical manuscripts, have turned up in stranger places... very cool!

I just wonder about it being opened to that passage...could be, but with recent developments in the middle east, it sounds contrived. JMO

It's a coincidence. There are tons of verses condemning the enemies of Israel in the Bible. In fact, that is one of the main thrusts of the entire book. Politics. Men, territories and politics.

The bogs are amazing places of preservation; here's the wikipedia entry for "bog bodies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bog_bodies

We've been through quite the investigation of bog people and mummies at our house, so goodness know I've become well-versed.

Also, conservationists are looking at how sacred places contribute to the preservaton of biodiversity (http://www.anthropology.hawaii.edu/r...ualecology.htm)

....so you won't see me messing with some fairy's ring!

In this delightful and illuminating look into a crucial but little-known "hinge" of history, Thomas Cahill takes us to the "island of saints and scholars," the Ireland of St. Patrick and the Book of Kells. Here, far from the barbarian despoliation of the continent, monks and scribes laboriously, lovingly, even playfully preserved the West's written treasury. When stability returned in Europe, these Irish scholars were instrumental in spreading learning, becoming not only the conservators of civilization, but also the shapers of the medieval mind, putting their unique stamp on Western culture.
it all makes sense~!

That book is so cool....Someone in my family recommended it (all my gparents emigrated from western Ireland to the US), and I avoided it as I avoid most of the lace doily and shamrock Irish stuff....

But that book ain't no lace doily and shamrock promotion. Some days with the world news being what it is, I think the Irish will need to do it again.

Irish, that's a riot. Are you prepared to take on the saving of Western civilization?
