"A medical transport jet carrying an organ transplant team went down Monday afternoon in Lake Michigan shortly after the pilot signaled an emergency, authorities said. There was no word on survivors.

Rescue teams were searching water that was 20 feet deep, Milwaukee Fire Chief Doug Holton said.

The pilot of the Cessna Citation issued a distress signal within five minutes of taking off from General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said.

The plane, carrying four passengers and two crew members, dropped off radar screens just after the pilot requested to return to the airport, and authorities notified the Coast Guard, Molinaro said.

Coast Guard Capt. Bruce Jones confirmed a transplant team from the University of Michigan was aboard the plane, but would not release their identities or occupations...."

I hope they find some survivors.

They've released more info... looks like you were right about it being a peds case

"The university identified those on the plane: Dr. David Ashburn, a physician-in-training in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery; transplant donation specialists Richard Chenault II and Richard Lapensee; pilots Dennis Hoyes and Bill Serra; and cardiac surgeon Dr. Martinus "Martin" Spoor."

This depresses me so much. I think of all the training those guys have been through... the number of lives they've saved or would save... it's just heart-breaking. These guys were from U of M... probably some of the best in the country, if not the world. And that poor family who was waiting for the organ... that will never come. I sure hope there are survivors. :

Remains of the passengers and plane have been found and the damage to the plane shows that the impact was unsurviveable.

What a nightmare! I am so sad to read this

I must just be aware of this because of our experiences, but it seems like so many pediatric cardiac surgeons die in terrible accidents Ds' surgeon died in a car accident, his would-be-next surgeon died in an apparent suicide, and now another one has been lost, along with an entire transplant team. There aren't *that* many pediatric cardiac heart surgeons. This is such a tragedy for everyone involved.

Now they're saying that the patient may become the seventh victim. They also say that there's been an increase in accidents regarding organ transplant planes... I'm wondering if it's because they are usually small planes or if it has to do with them leaving on such short notice.. being in a hurry, etc.

According to CNN, it seems to be an adult male who was to receive the organ.
Quote:
Hospital officials and organ-donation authorities would not identify the transplant patient other than to say he was a man, and would not say what type of organ he was awaiting, citing medical privacy rules. But one of the doctors killed was a cardiac surgeon, suggesting the patient was about to get a new heart or lungs.
