This is a name I'm considering (DH and I haven't really talked about this name yet LOL) but I'm confused...lol..

Is it "ah-meal-ya" or "ah-me-lia" ?

I think I say #2. But if I knew someone with that name and was saying it all the time, I feel like it would turn into #1--just because it seems to be a little easier to say (and I'm a little bit southern ).

i totally agree with the pp -- i would start with #2, but it would probably become #1 over time. this happened with dd1: her name is Laurel...i prefer "LAHrel" but it often comes out "LORel."

good news for you is that either pronunciation of Amelia is lovely and sweet, imho!

I've said it both ways. A meel ya is just slightly faster than A meel ee a.

Thanks guys!

Mia and Mimi are cute nn's for Amelia, never thought about that.

I have a Caroline already, so I thought Amelia would flow with that name.

Apparently in my local accent the difference is *very* subtle. I've said both out loud a few times and barely heard the difference. I also know 2 little Amelias and never realized there were multiple ways to pronounce it.

Either way is pretty and I think that others will follow your lead.

I'm not in your DDC, but wanted to pop in on this one because that is also a name we are considering if this baby is a girl.

I'd say it Ah-me-lee-ah, and hope everyone else would follow suit! That's the only way I've ever heard it said, actually.

DD's name is Amelia and we pronounce it like #2, but my good friend from Germany says it more like #1, which I like, but I'm so used to the way I say it. And she calls herself Mia, which I think is adorable!

I say "ah-meal-ya", but I'm Australian... I think it can be said either way, depending on how a person is introduced.
