My daughter is entering first grade and is quite happy with school.  I am too, actually.  For all the constraints they have (Race To The Top, NCLB etc) they do a great job.

But it's still so damn rote and it takes up so much time.  My daughter is above grade level in everything.  I would LOVE to take her out one day a week and just let her do what she wants all day.

I reckon this is impossible and I will have to just let her have a faux sick day as often as I can without letting the school or my daughter catch on.

But I would love to do it legally, openly, boldly.

Does anyone know of such a thing?

Thank you!

Unfortunately, not in NY! We do homeschooling, but have a supplemental program 2 days a week, full day. Here the regulations say that homeschooling parents, or one-one/one-family tutors hired by the parents, must do 51% or more of the educating. A co-op group like ours cannot do more than half the educational hours or we're considered to be running an unlicensed private school (that would be bad.).

Now, depending on where you are, there are some private schools who do early dismissal on Fridays so the kids get out at noon. And there are homeschool programs like the one I do.

Thanks LitMom.  I am not interested in homeschooling at all, really---what I have in mind would really be a day of unschooling per week.  I'll just have to do it slyly and occasionally I suppose.   I would love to do it openly, though!
