I'm curious to hear which brands of prenatal vitamins everyone is taking. I feel a little guilty admitting it, I'm just taking a regular one-a-day women's vitamin, some extra B6, some extra folic acid and some Ca/Mg. I get really overwhelmed when trying to research different brands of vitamins and supplements. So, if you take a brand that you like and feel good about can you post about it? My nausea is still really bad right now and all I remember about the prescription prenatals is that they were so difficult for me to take every day, b/c they were really large tablets!

My MW with ds2 recommended the Rainbow Light Prenatals (she said they are more naturally made while many brands are synthetic). So, that's what I'm still taking. I do the one a day type and the only way I can take it and not get sick is to do so right before bed.

Happily married to my dh, mama to ds1 (01/2005), ds2 (07/2007)  and dd (07/2009).

I take New Chapter Perfect Prenatal. I love that it is 100% food source, organic and contains a probiotic supplement as well. It never made me sick- and I prefer the food source vitamins to synthetic source vitamins.

With my previous pregnancies I took NO additional vits, except folic acid (I think) - we lived on a homestead, reared our own free range, organically fed, antibiotic free meat and we had a huge organic veggie garden....

Now we have just moved and I can feel that I need "something". I am taking a kiddies all-in-1 vitamin with added Vit B and Folic Acid.

I take the same kind and LOVE them!! I had been on a generic non-organic brand before I got my positive and they made me sick. I have not felt ill from these at all. I also take a generic folic acid, calcium, and fish oil omega 3.

I am NOT a pill person, but I am very proud of myself for taking my handful of vitamins everyday so far!

Last time I had a prescription prenatal, and they were huge, and I had to take them w/ food or I'd get sick.

At my last *annual* drs visit, I told my dr about us ttc, and that last time I was on prescription prenatals, but that I had run out and was currently taking the target brand prenatals. She said she could prescribe me more if I wanted, but that she was totally okay w/ me taking the target brand (and that it would probably be cheaper for me to do so, if that was a concern).

So yeah. I'm taking the Target brand. They're not too big, and so far I haven't had any nasea from them.

I took OTC generic prenatals + folic acid while TTC and now I'm on generic precription prenatals (they are little this time--yay!) and I just started taking omega-3 (organic flaxseed oil caps). When I get my bloodwork back I might take iron too.

I am taking New Chapter OG which I have worked out cost $25/month if you get them from Vitacost or Iherb online. I am considering alternating between those and Rainbow Light complete prenatal system (the one a day is not food based, iirc), which I have worked out to cost $15/month. I am also taking a Vitamin K2 & D & Calcium supplement from New Chapter b/c I am still nursing, and I have Floradix for Iron but I don't take it that much.

I am also trying to drink a quart or two of Nettle tea every day, and will add some other herbs (like Rasberry Leaf for my uterus and Oatstraw for my nerves) when I get around to ordering them.

I also want to take Cod Liver Oil for the extra vitamin D, but for the moment, I am scared to, so I am going to wait until the 2nd Trimester probably.

I have gone the perscription route briefly in my life, but I got so fed up when I wanted to switch and they wanted me to get a brand new perscription. When it is totally arbitrary which one you pick. But somehow they demand 'brand loyalty' for the life of the perscription. Also I found it frustrating that you couldn't even count on them to be always dye free! :

I take Floravit liquid herb-based multivitamin. It doesn't taste the greatest, but I know/can feel it's easily absorbable and doesn't cause me any GI issues. I also take a B-complex with 1 mg of folic acid, probiotics, toxin-free fish oils and cranberry extract (as needed). Phew!

I also take a DHA oil supplement. I take Minami, which is a newer brand from Europe and hands down the cleanest fish oil made. It is so light and tasteless too. My last PG I took the Nordic Naturals one, but its processing still exposes the oil to heat, which is not great for oil.

I take Bone Strength from New Chapter as well, zinc, and starting in the 2nd trimester I will take Floradix. My iron count got really low last pregnancy.

The thing that bothers me about prenatal one a days is that your cells can only assimilate a certain amount of a nutrient at one time, you reach something called cell saturation. When you only take your supplement once a day- you aren't getting close to what is on the label. You get a fraction of it, depending on what your cell can hold and the efficiency of your body's assimilation process. The baby is constantly growing, so you really need a more steady stream of nutrients.

In a perfect world we would get all the nutrients we need from food, but we can't always eat like we would like to, afford organic produce, and even when we try our best the soil has been so depleted foods don't pack the nutritional punch they did 50 years ago.

I am back on New Chapter Prenatals, I was trying to Nature's Plus Prenatal Liquid, because based on FDA study this one has less lead than New Chapter, however I cannot get to drinking liquid vitamins anymore.
Here is the study:

I also take Omega Mom from Country LIfe and Psyllium Husks for constipation.
I really love New Chapter vitamins!!!!!

I take the target brand prenatal. A midwife recommended it to me. They are smaller than other prenatals and easier for me to get down.

I also take the spectrum fish oil. I like that they use small wildcaught fish like mackerel and sardines.

I also take aspirin 162 mg/day. I have a history of pre eclampsia and have read that this can increase my chances of a healthy pregnancy. I assume that they will want me to continue taking this when I go for my first appointment.

Momma to DS 1, age 8 and rainbow baby DS2 4-21-11.

Whoa! Why would there be any lead in there at all? They really are trying to kill us!

Off to find food sources of folic acid.

All food that is grown in soil contains some amount of lead. It is a natural element in the earth's crust. The FDA limit for lead intake in a pregnant woman is 27mcg a day. Most of the supplements listed in this thread contain minute traces of lead. The more food material that is in a supplement the higher the risk of lead, however studies show that organically grown food has less trace lead content than conventionally grown food.

Rainbow light. I found that they not only have all the requirements I wanted in a prenatal but they also have what I need as a vegetarian.

But I also take an Omega fish oil vitamin, probiotics, and cal/mag. I read lots of studies that support the use of omega and probiotics in pregnancy and the added health benefits to the baby, plus they keep away YI

Thanks ladies. I ended up getting the Rainbow Light. I had not had a chance to make it to the natural food store, but wouldn't you know? CVS carries Rainbow Light. So, I got it while I was there getting some other items. I hope it will work out, I was surprised how big the pills are.

Rainbow Light one a day prenatal is making me nauseous. My midwife recommended New Chapter Prenatals. She said that rainbow light is synthetic and that it probably passes right through.

Hi folks,

I've been taking the Rainbow Light Complete Prenatal System, and I'm confused. Is this different from what you other RL folks are taking? They are very big vitamins and I"d been taking 1 a day for months before TTC. I'm 8.5 weeks and just noticed that the bottle recommends SIX of these a day if you're pregnant or breastfeeding!! Aaarg...I feel like maybe I haven't been getting enough folic acid now. Anyone know more about this?

Thanks!

They are different! Complete Prenatal System indeed is 6 pills/day. It is food based. One a day Rainbow Light is still 'natural' or whatever, as in no dye, no weird ingredients, but is NOT Food-based, iirc. You take one of those a day.

Rainbow light does make 2 kinds of prenatal vitamins.
