Veganmama - Haha ~ like I said, much stronger woman than I! I am pretty much a wimp when it comes to being cold, even though I've lived here almost my whole life. I can't imagine living in an even colder climate! Go you

well, seems like a "funny" time to do so, but I think Im joinging a gym today! My justification is totally sound- DH's gym is $49/mo - this new place would be the same but for TWO people and includes childcare yay!

I loved swimming during my previous 2 pregnancies. it feels so good to feel weightless for a portion of the day, LOL!
Plus i didn't slow down in the water as much as I did on land when everyone and their dog on the running path would be whipping by me.

Me: brought my stuff to run home from work tonight, it doesn't look like it will be too cold.

Anyone have any good water workout suggestions? I'm not a particularly strong swimmer, but I love being in the water I will have free pool access at school until the birth, so I would love to get in and use it (its been awhile...)

I plan to do a full yoga session today along with some pilates on the ball and the usual walks. Yesterday was an hour long Nia/pilates and one (short walk. This weekend I went on a 3 hour hike in the snow! Its amazing how my body does not have the strength or endurance I usually have when hiking or working out. I still don't look pregnant so its even hard for me to understand.

You could do some kicking with the flutter board. Really good for your legs and it doesn't matter if you are not a particularly strong swimmer.
Also swimming with a noodle.

Water running (as long as you can get the belt around your waist).

Do they offer any shallow water areobics classes?

This thread is so motivating I already feel like I'm gaining some conditioning following a rather sucky first trimester.

Yesterday, as planned, an hour prenatal DVD, today just 60mins on the elliptical. I felt too bushed for weights...

I am insanely jealous. I live in Ottawa (but grew up in Vancouver), so you can imagine how amazing swimming in the ocean sounds right about now, LOL!

Ran home last night (day 48 of transit strike). Power yoga at lunch today.

Went to a 45 minute spin class today. They've started this race day training so for the next two weeks, the classes are sitting the whole time, keeping heart rate at 65-75%. The HR is easy to do and good for being preggo, but the sitting killed me. I have a gel seat but that didn't even help today. I had to keep standing up to run every few minutes.
Anyone else here spinning? If so do you wear a HR monitor and how high are you letting yourself go?
I've exercised through other pregnancies, but never with a HR monitor.

Sorry Lizzie, I do not wear one. I use the talk test. If I can carry on a conversation my heart rate is not too high.
However, since I run alone I have to make sure there is no one around before I start talking to myself, LOL!

I will run home from work again tonight.

Parliament is having an emergency debate as to whether to legislate the transit workers back to work tonight. If they decide to and it doesn't pass unanimously (which it won't) it could take up to 2 months to go through the legislature.
Fun!

At least I will be getting my exercise in!

Hi Lizzie, the old advice was that you shouldn't go over 140bpm. However, the variability and volatility of heart rates (exacerbated by pregnancy) makes it very difficult to come up with very firm recommendations. I haven't been using a hr monitor, mostly because my hr is all over the place (resting hr is 10 beats faster, at least), but if I use the elliptical, which has a hr thing on it, I check it frequently and I don't go over 85%. More generally, using the perceived work scale (which I then check with hr) I'm keeping to about 70-75%. It's a comfortable workout but still very much a workout. My actual working hr hovers around 135-144 depending on the resistance setting.

As for exercise.. we had a huge snow storm yesterday so no gym. I did do a 5km erg (row) and I was sooooo slow. Today I'm hoping for some weights and cardio at the gym but my nausea and vomiting has returned with some force today. Boo.

I haven't been as productive in the latter part of this week because I'm trying to meet deadlines, but I have still gotten in at least 2 walks a day and some yoga. Today I will try to squeeze in an hour of Nia if I can pull myself away from this work long enough...

Not too much this past couple of days.. Yesterday I just drove by the gym, not even tempted to stop! I walked the dogs a couple of miles, though. This morning I just did 5 k on the elliptical and one set of weights as time was short. Tomorrow I'm planning for 60mins on the elliptical.

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Friday went to a body flow class (yoga, tai chi and pilates). Out of town for the weekend so no real exercise but did swim a lot with the kids in the hotel pool. Monday morning went to body pump (weight class). I love these Les Mills classes that my gym offers. On the website they have a brochure for how to modify different exercises during pregnancy - it's been very helpful.
Thanks ladies for helping to keep me motivated!

Hi exercising mamas

I had a pretty good weekend with exercise: 60mins on the elliptical on Saturday, 30mins on Sunday plus weights, Monday off, and today 50mins on the elliptical. I'm trying to muster some strength to do some yoga. I've really been neglecting any form of mind/body activity... so, must be more mindful to do some...

Tomorrow I plan on heading to the gym for weights and cardio.

I have been keeping up at least a low level of exercise- Sat we hiked up and down a butte, maybe ~4 hours in the snow (I need to do that daily), Sun I took one longer hike and a shorter walk. Mon thru today 2 walks/day plus either 1 hour of yoga or pregnancy workout video. I've also had to hoof it a bit around our hilly campus.

I am happy to announce that I can actually do more pushups/tricep dips/other arm work and it doesnt hurt anymore! :

I did a 6km run today...including one giant hill that I honestly thought might kill me...and I think I am not at the point where I cant do elevated runs...running down hill made my uterus sore...like tight...it was a really weird feeling, and not a pleasant one, but I have no idea what it was.

A pretty good week... Tues: 50mins elliptical and hour of prenatal yoga, Wed: weights, Thurs: 50mins elliptical. Fri: off... Sat: 45mins elliptical and strength.

The 50 mins workouts were supposed to be 60mins but I got really low blood sugar and had to stop. I had eaten before working out so not sure what's going on. it happened last week, too. This morning it didn't occur.. may have something to do with what I ate. I have serious protein aversions so probably that accounts for it.. i.e. my snacks not carrying me over.

Tomorrow I'm planning on yoga and the elliptical.

We just booked a Spring break vacation to Florida to a hotel with a tennis court. I'm really excited about the prospect!! It's absolutely freezing here in Maine.

I'm maintaining my cardio/weight machine workout once a week and yoga class once a week. I've had a little more energy lately so I'm not feeling completely exhausted afterward. Yesterday I worked pretty hard in intermediate yoga, only modifying my plank pose (knees on the floor) and resting in child's pose a few times. The teacher showed me how to modify a number of poses (including boat pose, savasana, and seated forward fold) to make them more suitable for PG. I felt a little self-conscious though because people wanted to know *who* was PG and getting the special poses. (It was a big class and the teacher mainly demonstrated from the front of class.)

There is one other PG woman in my Power Yoga class which is nice.

Zubee, I am headed for Cuba for a week on friday. Very excited about running on the beach as opposed to through the snow and ice!

Ran 5k yesterday outside. it was pretty warm so I got very wet feet from all the melting!

It's good to hear that some other Preggo ladies are continuing to work out. I think it's really healthy and it actually helped with the nausea during the first trimester.

I used to downhill ski a lot but I stopped when I got to my 13th week - I'm too nervous that someone will run into me. So, I've been cross-country skiing lately. I usually go about 3 or 4 times a week. I went running a few days ago on a snow-packed trail but it felt weird having a bigger belly bouncing around.

It's cold here so I have enough layers on when I work out that people can't tell I'm pregnant. Plus, I'm still only four months along.

I am worried that people I don't know will stop me while I'm running/xc skiing and say stuff to me about how I shouldn't exercise when I'm pregnant. Has that happened to anyone? How would you respond?

Oh, veganmama, have a wonderful time in Cuba!!! We were considering Mexico, Spain, and Cuba... but this is out first baby and I am so overly cautious that we decided to stay in the US!! Even though Cuban healthcare is absolutely wonderful... !!

Yesterday I did 60mins on the elliptical. Today was to be a day off but I don't think I'll get to workout tomorrow... so just weights this morning. That said, I may try and get to the gym before work. This might be wishful thinking as it will involve getting to the gym by 5:15 and I live half an hour away.

Thanks, everyone, for keeping me inspired! I read yesterday that babies of mamas who exercise tend to have on average a higher IQ (of about 5 points!).

Yep, and less likely to be obese as adults themselves too.

I have to take a day off today as I am working 9 am until 9 pm. But I will do power yoga and run tomorrow.

Will also take my running shoes to Cuba. Will alternate running and swimming.
