I am just wondering when all of you will have your first doctor/ mw appts. I know some people have already been for blood work. I am just trying to decide if I need to find a mw here in Utah. We are moving at the end of January and I would like to wait till I get down to AZ to find a mw. Just curious when you do your first prenatal appt??

My office told me 8 weeks but that they will 'sneak' me in at 6.5 weeks seeing as I just had a m/c.

Scine this is my fourth I realy don't do many prenatal visits I have BTDT so I don't have any questions and they dont really do anything in the beginning anyway I'll probly go in around 12 weeks and then do blood work and have them order the 20 wk u/s then and then go back around 5 months, but I don't go very often unless I feel there is a problem or I get named high risk.

I need to call my midwife so she can add us to her calendar for August, but I probably won't go see her until I'm 12 weeks.

I have an ultrasound on the 18th with a technician but my prenatal appt. with my doctor is on the 23rd. That will make me about 9 weeks. My doctor's office told me that first appointments are usually between 8 to 10 weeks. I was a little surprised that it would not be sooner but it is my first baby and a complete learning experience..

I'm going in on the 23rd too. I'm not sure what my doc will do, but I know she'll give me an ultrasound. By that point, I guess I'll be about 7 weeks...will the baby look like anything by then? or just a cute little blob? I'm telling some folks on Christmas and it would be cool to have a ultrasound to email around after I give the big news...

ETA: If my LMP was Nov 1, I'll be 7 weeks Dec 23 right? I keep reading different ways to count the weeks and it's starting to confuse me...How do you all count the weeks?

Hi ExpatMom

Go to this link where you put in your LMP and it will give you a week by week account from LMP to your 42nd week. It also gives great info on what is going on with your baby at what week specific to your due date. Check it out..

My midwives schedule the first appointment at 8 weeks. The feel the belly and check for a heartbeat. No u/s unless you request a 20 week structural or if they suspect a problem.

I'm sure if you were concerned you could pop in to see a local UT midwife, but in most cases, I think the recommended time to have a first appointment is by 13 weeks. Especially in midwifery care, there is not much more than palpating to check the growth of your uterus and maybe a doppler check (although many women go without those as well). Early appointments are more about establishing the beginnings of a relationship with your care provider and answering questions. The first labs drawn during pregnancy are not as accurate as those drawn before pregnancy anyways (I know we rarely even draw them at clinic unless there are indications that we should.) It can be nice to have baseline blood pressure and such too. I guess just keep well hydrated and nourished especially if you plan not to seek first trimester care.

Since I'm apprenticing with midwives (here in UT too), I have not quite figured out what my prenatal care will look like. We are very laid-back with our clinic style, so I don't know if I will set appointments or just get poked and chat between other appointments and births....hmmmm....we'll see....

Thanks for the url...
According to that I was right in saying I'll be in my 7th week by Christmas. But my Dr. Sears Pregnancy book counts the weeks differently- instead of counting from LMP they count from ovulation/conception. So according to Sears, by Christmas I would be only 5 weeks! I like the sound of 7 much better. I guess in the Sears book they are saying gestation is 38 weeks, but most places say it's 40 if you count from LMP. It'd be easier if there was a standard!

i'll call to set up an appt as soon as i get the medicaid. i went to the health dept today to get started on that.

last time i guess my first appt i was around 6-8 weeks

i'm eager to have an appt to start getting to know the midwives....i'll be using a different group this time than i did last time, but if it wasn't for that i'd probably be more relaxed as to when to schedule

I have a midwife appointment scheduled for tomorrow, just to meet her.

Otherwise, no prenatal appointments scheduled yet.

Sounds like I'm in the minority, but I'll be doing the 11-week Ultrascreen sonogram for Down's Syndrome. My mw is on vacation until mid-January, so I guess that's when we'll figure it all out. Right now my big problem is figuring out health insurance...I don't have any at the moment!

I have seen my re/nurse every other day since my positive beta. I got my bfp from ivf so my re does a lot of bloodwork and the 1rst ultrasound at 5 weeks (yesterday) and my second will be next week to check for the heartbeat. Then I'll be released to my ob. I too plan on doing the nt scan.

My scan was very exciting I have a picture of my little one who is at the fetal pole stage of development.

I just scheduled my first appointment for 1/13 I will be 10 weeks at that time.

It is with the same midwife who was at the delivery for DS so we already know eachother pretty well.
The most important this is for us to discuss how I can prevent the issues we had in my first delivery and to make sure it did not cause a problem.

My first appointment will be in the 16th, with a midwife. Hope to find the best midwife for us and hope things are doing well! I would be 6 weeks then.

I always try to wait as long as possible. With my fifth I waited until week 14. Mostly because I hated my doctor's office and how long they would make me wait. I changed over to a birthing center and midwife and then I looked forward to each appointment. This time it will probably be around 12 weeks.

I was already seeing a fertility specialist, and I'll continue to do some blood work and a couple early vaginal ultrasounds probably.

In the mean time I have interviews scheduled with 2 homebirth midwives next week. I'm not sure when I'll do my first real appointment with a midwife. I imagine that will depend on when my fertility specialist dismisses me to regular care (I'll probably aim for ASAP with that, but not before we have a heartbeat), as well as how long it takes me to find the right midwife, what that midwife's standard protocol is, and what I can get my insurance to cover.

I'll be calling on Monday and trying to get in as soon as possible. I am going to want my progesterone levels checked right away, because of my previous miscarriage. I also want to get the results from my Thyroid scan.

I will most likely decline the tests for Downs, etc... Nothing they find will cause me to terminate, so, I'd rather skip the tests.

I've got no clue when my first appointment is going to be. We're in the middle of moving to Florida right now so probably not until we are settled in our new house. I'm really hoping Florida is a midwife-friendly state as we'd like to start interviewing a few when we get there...

Hey saoirse,

I found lists of interview questions HERE and HERE that I think are pretty comprehensive and helped me come up with my own list of questions. We won't be asking all of them of course but there were a few that I hadn't even thought of myself.

Thanks for posting those links - I have my first midwife interview on Tuesday and hadn't even started putting together questions. From looking at those links, I guess there is A LOT that I could ask, though I probably won't do every single one.
