Don't post here if you are sensitive. I have always wanted to start a thread for those of us that want honest feedback about our name choices, not just feedback from people who like the name. This might be really mean, but there have been so many times where I read a name thread and I am just begging the poster (in my head) to not use the name, it would just be cruel to name a baby that. Anyone else ever feel that way? Wouldn't you rather have someone tell you up front that a name is truly awful rather than have your child have to live with it?

Okay, so I will start, feel free to tell me any associations you might have. My son's name is Elijah and our last name is Potter.

Top picks right now:
Annabelle or Annabella
Amelia (too common now?)
Lucia (Lucy)
Sun
Eva

Secondary picks:
Stormy (go ahead, rip it apart )
Delilah
Madiline
Adaline or Adalaide
Juliet
Amelie

That is all I got. Other suggestions are welcome!

ddclub crashing, cause i could not exist. here it goes, you asked for it

Top picks right now:
Annabelle or Annabella- annabelle reminds me of the baby annabelle dolls
Amelia- i have had serious problems with every amelia i have known, but that is a personal thing for me
Lucia (Lucy)- lucy is great. positive associations with the narnia character. unless you live in an area where lucia is common, it will cause confusion. is it loo-see-ah or loosha?
Sun- i imagine saying "this is my daughter, sun"
Eva- nice, classic name.

Secondary picks:
Stormy- word, not name
Delilah- the one in the bible isn't very nice
Madiline- spell it madeleine, and i love it
Adaline or Adalaide- adaline is inferior to madeleine. go with the real name. adelaide spelled properly is ok, but not my favorite
Juliet- would not want to name my child after such a tragic figure. julia, juliana are great
Amelie- movie character

the classic names you have chosen are great. stick with those, and your baby will have a great name. babies are unique, and you can choose a more unique name, but unique spellings to a disservice to everyone.

I love all your names but Sun. And that's not to say I think it is horrible it's just not one I'd use myself.

Since we're being honest I think the above is a load

But I am firmly in the "name your child whatever your heart desires" camp.

And honestly I think common names do more of a disservice I guess it depends on where you are coming from.

Awesome thread! I will be posting here when dh and I narrow down our list (we aren't finding out the sex and we still have 30 names each for boy and girl options!)

I'm not a fan of Sun. Don't get me wrong. I like the nature names and we have quite a few that we are considering. Maybe it is because you are having a girl and the sun in many cultures is masculine (moon fem.)? If she is Asian, she might be able to pull it off.... maybe that's just because I've been watching too much Lost.

Stormy reminds me of a gladiator from that ridiculous show that use to be on tv. All I can picture is an extremely muscular woman in some sort of gold bikini or a patriotic leotard. Oh and with unnaturally huge boobs.

That said, I do like Eva, Lucy (though I prefer Lucie), and Delilah. These are on our list too. Wait I think dh took Delilah off our list (ever listen to Love songs with Delilah?) Maybe I should add it back....

I strongly prefer ususual names. I personally would never want my child to have the same name as 5 other people in their class. We're going to name our daughter Olivine because I love it and it sticks with our color theme. (my son is Cyan, which is a shade of blue).

My top picks are:
Adeline
Lucia (not Lucy)

I think these are too common right now:
Eva (I have met at least 25 babies named Ava recently which is so close)
Annabell (Isabell/Isabella is in the top 10 right now, this is also too close)
Madeline
Delilah
Amelia
Amelie

Not into these:
Sun
Stormy
Juliet

Other names that I like (yes, they are names from our name list):
Scarlett
Violet

Abra, Married to George, Mother to DS 12/03 & DD1 08/09 & DD2 12/11.  We are planning our next adventure to South America in April 2014!

Top picks right now:
Annabelle or Annabella - I like annabelle, not the other
Amelia (too common now?) - no way
Lucia (Lucy) - I like lucy better, and it is really pretty
Sun no
Eva - I like this but perhaps because my DD is Eve

Secondary picks:
Stormy (go ahead, rip it apart ) you already know how bad it is , sounds silly, but Storm could grow on me
Delilah - so, so name
Madiline
Adaline or Adalaide
Juliet
Amelie - don't like the last 4 at all

Is this the kind of feedback you were looking for? I am just being honest.

Amelia (too common now?) - Yeah, I think this is also a little too common.
Lucia (Lucy) - Lucy is VERY common among babies I know(but maybe not in your area?), though I love the name Lucia and that is most likely going to be my dd's middle name)
Sun - Mmmm, no. Just a little too far out there. Maybe Summer?
Eva - Sounds old-ladyish to me, but then again I only know one Eva and she is my husband's grandmother. Maybe Eve?

Secondary picks:
Stormy (go ahead, rip it apart ) - Don't really like it - maybe for a boy, but still not even sure of that. Now, Rainie or Raina is a definite
Delilah - I think this is SO pretty and not too common.
Madiline - too common, although pretty and classic.
Adaline or Adalaide - Classic, not too common, and I was actually thinking of using a variation of this since my grandma's name was Adela...but we're going a different routte
Juliet - Anything Julie-ish is too common for me.
Amelie - too close to Amelia

That is all I got. Other suggestions are welcome!

Not in your ddc, but here goes:

Top picks right now:

Annabelle or Annabella - pretty but popular
Amelia (too common now?) - not common, nice and retro
Lucia (Lucy) - also nice and not common. Pronunciation issues
Sun - Dude. Do not go there. Old hippie to the max
Eva - nice, pretty

Secondary picks:

Stormy - Two words for ya: porn star
Delilah - strong, take no prisoners name
Madiline - good name, bad spelling. Spell it right: Madeline or Madeleine
Adaline or Adalaide - to me these sit right on the retro/frumpy fence. Your call!
Juliet - nice, but the tragic association would make me shy away
Amelie - people know this one through the movie. I wouldn't do it. Unless you are French.

I like everything except for Sun and Stormy, for reasons I already explained on other name threads... My name is Sunshine, and I still get negative reactions, jokes, songs, etc. It's painful! I'm the kind of person who doesn't like to be the focus of attention and even "positive" feedback sometimes makes me uncomfortable. Nevertheless, it is my name and I'm sticking with it... it's just who I am now. But - I urge you - Please don't name your child a word that is commonly used in phrases and well known song lyrics!!! The jokes, songs and "clever" comments (aka, the same thing I have heard thousands of times) are neverending!!!

Happily married mom to DS (Aug 09) and two furry troublemakers.

Annabelle or Annabella - I like Annabelle.
Amelia (too common now?) - Hate this name.

Sun - Horrible name choice for a child, IMO.
Eva - It's ok.

Secondary picks:
Stormy (go ahead, rip it apart ) - I actually like this.
Delilah - Like it.
Madiline - Love it. This is my daughters name (different spelling though)
Juliet - Hate it.
Amelie - Hate it.

I so agree and want to add or rhymes easily with any of the above. Though my name is INSANELY common in my generation, the rhyme comments were way to common. I hate my common name and if any nickname had stuck in my life I would have changed my name!

Uh oh, it sounds like we might have several Lucia/Lucy babies in this DDC! We are planning on using that if we have a girl. I want Lucia, but DH doesn't like that and would rather have Lucy.

I don't really like Sun, Stormy, or Delilah, or the alternate spellings for Madeleine, Adeline, Adelaide, etc. I really like Madeleine and Adelaide themselves, just not the weird spellings.

I also like Amelia and we've considered that name as well, only we'd spell it Emelia because that is my mom's name

That is where I got the name. I love lost.

As for the spellings, I am not stuck on anything, and just wrote those down quick without checking the real spelling first.

Loving the feedback! I guess stormy and sun are out. Lucy seems like it will be too common.

I don't know, it is hard. We had a hard time choosing between Elijah and Simon for our son, and I still kind of think he is a Simon. We won't name her until we meet her, of course, but it will be nice to have a list of 5 names that we love to choose from.

Who else wants honest feedback on their names?

I would share, but there is no way I'm getting DH off of this name(believe me I've tried!), and if it's picked apart it's just going to depress me. lol I do like it though(just maybe not in love with it like he is) - I just think it's best to keep it to ourselves for now.

I'm glad you gave us your last name - it's so much easier to judge names!

Top picks right now:
Annabelle or Annabella: Annabelle sounds nice with Potter, Annabella doesn't.
Amelia (too common now?): Yes, too common
Lucia (Lucy): Lucia (Loo-chi-ah) is too ethnic for Potter. Lucy is very cute, though.
Sun: Don't like it at all - sounds silly: Sun Potter - say it out loud and you'll see.
Eva: Too common, along with Eve and Ava. But pretty names, nonetheless.

Secondary picks:
Stormy: Are you going for the superhero type? Stormy Potter? Nope.
Delilah: So-so, not crazy about, but goes well with Potter.
Madiline: No way - spell it correctly and *maybe* it would look OK.
Adaline or Adalaide: I think this is an ugly name, quite honestly - not feminine at all!
Juliet: Not bad with Potter
Amelie: Are you going to pronounce it properly (a-MAY-lee) - if so, then it's too French for Potter. It's a pretty name on its own, though.

That was me being brutally honest. I'm also one of the "to each her own" types and I would never post my possible names in a thread like this because I don't give a *crap* what others think of my kid's names

Shannon, mum to ds1 (8/03), ds2 (6/05), dd (5/07), and ds3 (7/09)

Top picks right now:
Annabelle or Annabella I really don't like these names. They remind me of playing Barbies when I was 8. I would name my Barbie, Annabelle because I thought it sounded like a Princess name. It just seems like a name an 8 year old likes.
Amelia (too common now?)I love it and I don't know any Amelia's under the age of 30. And I have been teaching early childhood for many years so I usually have a good grasp on what is super common.
Lucia (Lucy) This is becoming more common. I have known a couple Lucys and 1 Lucia. I like Lucy, but not Lucia
Sun I wouldn't use it personally because I'm not courageous enough to use nature names. Though I always like them when other people use them. I particularly like Ocean and River, but maybe more for
Eva Once was a favorite of mine, but has become much too popular

Secondary picks:
Stormy (go ahead, rip it apart ) Uh... not so much
Delilah I like it
Madiline Don't really like the spelling, but I also have known a lot of children named Madeline or Madelyn or Madeleine so I think it's too common
Adaline or Adalaide Don't love it. Also not a big fan of non-standard spellings.
Juliet Well obviously I love this name because it's my dd's name and I'm surprised so many people dislike it, but it doesn't matter because I love it so much. I think the other Julie-names like Julia and Julianna are really common, but I don't know many Juliette's. We choose the french spelling because it is the diminutive of Julie in honor of my French Grandmother Julie. I love the nickname Jules. It is the name of a tragic character, but she also was a beautiful, youthful, passionate character and I choose to focus on those points instead. I love that it is familiar, everyone knows how to pronounce it, and yet it just isn't that common. Also in our family someone had something negative to say about every other name I liked, but everyone seemed to really like Juliette.
Amelie I wouldn't choose it for child, but I think it's lovely for a little girl. It does make me think of the movie which I don't think is a bad thing

Jennifer, mama to darling dancing Juliette, and sweet baby Jameson

Wheeee! This is fun!

Top picks right now:
Annabelle or Annabella - I like it, gives lots of options for nick names (Ann, Anna, Belle, Bella)
Amelia (too common now?) - I love it, but way too common.
Lucia (Lucy) - Lucia is pretty, Lucy wouldn't be my choice.
Sun - Hmm, nope. Closest I would go to Sun would be Soleil (French), but then you get people thinking about Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster)
Eva - Pretty again, but faily common these days.

Secondary picks:
Stormy (go ahead, rip it apart ) - I have a stripper friend that uses Stormy as her stage name
Delilah - Pretty, and has a couple songs about her
Madiline - I've never seen it spelled this way, only Madeline
Adaline or Adalaide - I likie.
Juliet - Where for art thou Romeo!
Amelie - Again, I likie.

to Dale, : to Ronan (2-22-06) and Nessa (8-6-09), Monkey to 4 :, and geek to everyone else.

Top picks right now:
Annabelle or Annabella - I love the name, but I prefer it spelled with N, Anabelle
Amelia (too common now?) - First thought is Amelia Bedelia
Lucia (Lucy) - I'm not crazy about Lucy and Lucia has too many different pronunciations, and from experience having a name with multiple pronunciations can get old.
Sun - Not one of my favorites of the earthy hippie girls names.
Eva - I prefer Evelyn

Secondary picks:
Stormy (go ahead, rip it apart ) - Honestly my first thought was that's a strippers name.
Delilah - I like Delilah, but it just shot up the popular chart last year. I'm guessing because of the song.
Madiline - I don't like alternative spellings of classic names... again from experience it gets old having to spell your name for people. Madeline is really popular around here, I know four little girls named Madeline.
Adaline or Adalaide - I like Adalaide
Juliet - Like this one too.
Amelie - I like it. It does immediately make me think of the movie.

Annabelle or Annabella - I like Anabelle better than anabella
Amelia (too common now?) - pretty cute but reminds me of amelia earhart
Lucia (Lucy) - I like Lucy not not Lucia
Sun - I'm not a fan. The first word that comes to mind is shine.
Eva - I like this name

Stormy (go ahead, rip it apart ) - I don't like it, it sounds like a kid with a bad temper
Delilah - I like it but the song "hey there delilah" comes to mind
Madiline - I don't like the alternative spelling, epsecially since it has "line" in it
Adaline or Adalaide - I like Adeline (spelled that way) but Adelaide reminds of me accolades (sp?) or Kool-aid
Juliet - I like it spelled Juliette
Amelie - Is it pronounced Emily? I've been seeing this one a lot lately spelled this way, I think it will be the #1 name pretty soon. But I do like it.

But Stormy gets my vote. I don't know why, I really really like it.

I don't post up my names to ANYONE. ever. because I do not care what people think about what I call my children.

Sorry I could never use the name Kali for my childs name because of the religious significance behind the name. There is another one that I have seen some use around here I could also not use because of the same reasons. I think it would be a hard name to grow with with the ties that come with it.

I am not in love with the spelling but I think Madalyn is a very pretty name.

Abigail is such a pretty classic name.

Not only because of what PP said, but it's also a common cat name, especially for calico colored cats. :P

Abigail with a middle name of Ella, Violet, or Lily (LMK which middle name sounds best)
*love this one. I would have Abigail on my list but it is my sil's name.

Kali (pronounced like Cahl-eeeee) middle name Jade
*like Cauli-flower? I am not a big fan either way.

Madalyn (no idea what middle name we'd use)[/QUOTE]Yep, love it, although I think it is way too common.

I think Elijah and Delilah would be awesome sibling names together. I like the song "hey there delilah" I have no idea who sings it, but I have the tune in my head.

I like the name Amelia. Sounds very simple/little house on the prairie to me. My brother used the variation of Amele' (Ahhh-mih-lay) which I also love.

BIG FAT NO to Sun and Stormy (especially stormy, that's just stupid)

The rest are nice, but not names I would personally choose...

Sarah

Isn't Stormy one of the Chincoteague ponies?
