Ok heres the scoop and I need your advice!

BF and his friends all raft the Sacramento River (in Sacramento, CA) on Memorial Day weekend every year. The rafts are all safe, the water is mostly safe. No rocks or rapids here, there will be some larger currents but nothing I couldn't swim out of if needed. It's going to be about 90-95 degrees and we will be out there for about 5 hours.

I'm more worried about the heat than swimming, I am a strong swimmer and I usually don't get overheated too bad. I live in Redding CA...which most of you probably have never heard of but our summers rival Death Valley, yes, Death Valley. We broke a local record when I was pregnant with DD in '02...we reached almost 130 degrees, supposedly the hottest place on the planet that day. Needless to say, I'm acclimated to spending most of my summers in 100 plus temps, it doesn't bother me.

If I get hot, we can always get off the raft and figure out a way home. Usually one or two people stay at home and can come do pick ups if need be, so if we have to leave we can. There will also be shade and I plan on taking as many measures as possible to stay cool if I decide to go.

Would you go?

Thanks for the input, and have a great holiday weekend!

I'd go, sounds like fun. This time next year you'll have an infant.

Totally! That's why I live in Wisconsin!

But yeah, if you're staying cool I don't see why not to go. Since you're used to it I wouldn't think it would be an issue. I would think hydration would be more of an issue with temps that high so I'd say to take plenty of water, but other than that I'd go (if I could stand 5 hours outside at 20 weeks pregnant at that heat!).

I'd totally do it! If you get too hot, can you hop out of the raft and float alongside during the slow parts? That's one of my favorite parts of rafting.

Stay hydrated, and have a blast!

Is it bad that I didn't even think of that? Lol...sometimes you get so wrapped up in pregnant stuff that you forget, hey...our babies get to have a first christmas this year, a first halloween too and etc.

My goodness, you guys would hate it here. It really is a hot town. I don't know why though, I think it's because we are the northernmost valley of CA and the way the wind systems work, or this town was put under a curse or something. I was already up to 105 last week, thankfully this week we're cruising around 95.

Well, I think we're gonna go. Just talked to BF and I guess it's a large event, radio stations, emergency medical personnel, cops, etc etc will all be around. That makes me comfortable knowing that ER's will be closer than not. AND also gives me a great excuse for buying a maternity swimsuit...

I would go and have gone, in fact my pregnancy with DD I did a mellower section of whitewater rafting in our local river. My Dh and I used to be owners/guides of the local company, so I figured it was one of those keep doing all the things you normally would do. I did the class 3 stretches, not the class 4(DH would not have that). There were rapids, but not huge rapids.

I also did a super friggin hot summer "booze cruise" with a bunch of friends when I was 8 months pg, it was oh about 110F and everyone was getting drunk, except me and DH. No one thought I'd want to go, but it was August 110F and what else did I have to do. I had nothing better to do. I did bring a bunch of water, a bunch of sliced up watermelon(OMG so good), tons of food and just jumped in when I got hot. Everyone was all worried about me, but I still don't quite know why, I was pregnant-not sick, ugh.

We'll be going in a few weeks on a float with our DD and our dogs once our river comes down a bit. Have fun and go mama!

When I was pregnant with my first I did a two week trip down the Colorado River(Grand Canyon so plenty of rapids). It was a blast. I was about 18 weeks. The only miserable part was I could have used an extra pillow while sleeping and hiking the 10 miles out of the canyon..that almost killed me.
I would do it again.

It's usually pretty hot and humid here. I'm in Oklahoma and we've had a mild spring so far but last year we got temps in the 100's + for over a month. I am usually an indoors kind of person, but we did get a pool membership last year. Somehow, I don't think that is even on the same plane as a raft trip LOL

I guess the OP's raft trip has already come and gone, but I just did one yesterday (at 23 weeks pg) and had a great time. Of course I recommend all the standard safety equipment (life jacket, helmet, wetsuit if the water's very cold), but why not, otherwise? Our stretch of river was "easy" enough that my 6-year-old was in the raft with me, too, so obviously I wasn't doing anything too extreme.
