We've been agonizing over boy names for awhile, and we seem to be down to 6. (This could change at any time, I fear.) Unfortunately I don't like his favorites much and he doesn't like mine, but here are the top 6 that neither of us hate.

DD's name is Vivian, and we'd like something similarly classic, spellable, and not too common. Her middle name is Helen, after someone.

DS's middle name will probably be "Michael" after DH (which I am kinda against, I'd rather honor somebody, but my grandpa's names are awful and for whatever reason he isn't jumping all over his).

Our last name starts with T, 2 syllables, and is very English.

Elliot Michael T------
Devin Michael T------
Emmett Michael T------
Lucas Michael T------
Edmund Michael T------
Theodore Michael T------ (NN Theo ok)

Erin, mom to DD (1/06) and DS (10/09)

I really like Elliot. That was one of the boy names that we considered before we found out we are having a girl.

The only one on the list that I don't care for is Devin. It sounds less classic than the others to me. I like the middle name Michael with all of them, except Lucas (although it's far from terrible and I do like the name Lucas).

Well, considering we are naming our son Devin, I'm quite a fan of the name.

But, I think I like Elliot and Lucas best with Michael.

For some reason I like E names, a lot. I'd pick either Elliot or Emmett. DS is Elliot, and we call him Eli.

I like them all except for Edmund. My brother's middle name was Elliot. His first name was Seth. My mother wanted to name him Devin, but my dad did not like it. I really like Devin. You have a good list of names there. You shouldn't have too much trouble picking a great one for your baby.

I love all but Devin. It's not at all classic, IMO.

I just saw this through new posts- sorry if I'm not supposed to reply!

Elliott and Emmett both run together with a last name starting with T when said "firstname lastname" (without including the middle name, which isn't often used). If you love the name I'd still use it though- our last name also starts with T and DS is Nate.

Good luck

~ Amy

i dig Theodore, esp since you can shorten it to Theo if you wish. I like longer names that have a diminutive, for family and friends, like my name: rebecca gets shortened to bec by my fam.

rebecca: mama to Jack Oct09 born at home! - BF, Co-sleeping, cloth diapering, child-led solids; writer, book designer and teen mentor; dh 10+yrs (who gets to work at home!) and two cats.

I just wanted to say THANKS to everybody for their comments. We've got it down to 4 which is PROGRESS! DH decided he was firmly anti-Devin after hearing it could be feminine (Devon) and we agreed that maybe Edmund wasn't spellable enough (there is a local city Edmond).

(I am totally crashing your ddc, but I LOVE talking about names!)

I agree that Elliot is becoming gender neutral, and it seems that all gn names end up going girl in the end. Plus, an obvious shortening for Elliot is "Ellie", which is def. a girls name, so if your dh is not into Devin for the girly issue, that probably rules out Elliot as well.

And Emmett, I love!, but it also has the "girly" nickname (Em, Emmy) issue, if that is going to be an issue.

I love Theodore and Edmund with Vivian, but I agree with you on the Edmond/Edmund thing being a rule-out.

Lucas, I'm just kinda eh on. It is pretty common around where I live, so it doesn't have the same old fashioned ring to it that Vivian does, even though it is obviously an old name as well.

So, my vote is for Theodore. Theo and Viv, I love it!

I totally love Elliot but then again I have an Elliott . I think that t as a last name would be hard for him to say though so I'd vote against in in your case. Also, at least in my area, we keep meeting ALOT of other Elliotts, not so many as say John or Matt or something but I think it's really on the rise in popularity. I have never met a female Elliott but Elliotte is a french girl's name and of course there is the character on Scrubs.

I vote Lucas. I like Theo, but alliteration is also hard on a kid (my DH's initials are DDD and so is his sister's. He hates it)

Another vote for Theodore! This was on my short list (but sadly, not on DH's). I think it's a great name -- very adaptable, cute on a baby, grown-up sounding on an adult. I like alliteration -- and I'm assuming that your last name is a hard T- sound, not a Th-, so it won't be that glaring -- but I guess as another poster pointed out you should think about how you feel about that.

My second choice is Lucas. How do you feel about the nn Luke? Or maybe my second choice is Emmett -- Emmett and Vivian sound good together. You have good names, I can see why it's hard to choose one!

I vote for Elliot. Actually, Elliott is our #1 on our girl list. I like gender neutral names (although my DS is named Miles, not too gender neutral, but I do know of a girl named Miles). Our last name starts with a "T" as well.
