Why does it hurt so friggin' much when your baby latches on to the side of your boob instead of your nipple?!

Anyone had this happen?

that happened during an early morning half-asleep feed and ouch- it woke me right up! I was actually really sore for the whole rest of the day!

I haven't had her do that but at times when she runs her little nails over the side of my boob it feels like a razor blade running over it.
