I had my midwife checkup yesterday and got the results from my 20 week ultrasound. Unfortunately, it was not all good news. They detected bilateral choroid plexus cysts (CPCs) (pockets of fluid) in the baby's brain. This can be either no big deal or a very big deal. On the one end of the spectrum, they could just go away by themselves and have no affect what so ever. On the other end, they could be a marker for the devastating Trisomy 18. We will see a genetic specialist on Tuesday for a detailed ultrasound study and then go from there. Luckily, my alpha fetal blood screening from early pregnancy is completely normal and no other soft markers of Trisomy 18 were detected in the ultrasound. The midwife said that about 90% of the cases resolve by themselves by 34 weeks. However, I am still freaking out!

Anyway, we will just try to trust in the Lord and take things as they come!

Kelly

Update: 6-30-09

We met with the genetic doctor and discussed everything that a CPC entails. Then, we had a detailed ultrasound. Given that my bloodwork was all normal and NO other soft markers were found on ultrasound, the dr suggested no other testing. The ultrasound took forever but was well worth it. At this point, given the fact that CPCs were detected, my risk of having a baby with a genetic defect is no greater than a women of the same age with no CPCs. (Did that make sense?) Anyway, the dr said that my risk of m/c with amnio is at this point higher than my risk of genetic problems. So, we declined the amnio and will go back to enjoying and not worrying!

oh, btw, I could no longer take the suspense and we decided to find out the sex. Rachel will have a sister and I am so excited for her!

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but this happened to a friend and her baby ended up being just fine. I hope yours will be okay too! I'll be thinking about you.

There are so many scary aspects to u/s, this is one of them! The odds are in your favor though, so try to stay calm.

You'll be in my thoughts.

I don't have any experience with this, but maybe you can find some information or moms-to-be in or who have been in a similar situation on the boards.

Best wishes.

I just wanted to send you hugs and also let you know that this was detected in my DD's fetal scan and everything turned out fine. In fact, I opted not to do any further testing since there were no other soft markers on the scan. I initially freaked out (having never heard of this) but then found this site: http://www.choroidplexuscyst.org/ which I found very helpful and which eased my worries.

That experience was also the sole reason why I chose not to do u/s this pregnancy. Hugs mama.

I was in your shoes with DS2, but I was 35 so the risk of Trisomy 18 was higher than the risk of an amnio. I chose on the spot to have an amnio. I had to know that he was ok, couldn't bear to go through the pregnancy not knowing. Of course, all was fine, we were relieved, and it was the right call for us.

GL2U - I would recommend talking with a good genetic counselor about pros and cons of future testing esp. amnio. The amnio was scarier in thought than in reality. It took about 20 min, had some cramping, went home and lay down and rested for 24 hrs, then was fine.

DDC crashing.

My baby had them at 20 weeks as well but my peri wasn't concerned in the least. I can't believe they are having you see a geneticist over it. I get ultrasounds every month b/c I am high risk. They were gone by the next u/s. From my understanding the vast majority at that stage mean nothing. If the rest of your screenings were OK then I would not be worried in the least. Ultrasounds often give us too much info, IMO.

I am so sorry and totally understand your anxiety. I wish you the best and have to agree that the 90% chance that everything is OK is MUCH MUCH bigger than the 10% that things might be wrong. I will be thinking of you, though...

sending lots of hugs for comforting and prayers for health. My genetic ultrasound dx me with SUA - single umbillical artery as a soft marker for genetic anomalies as well as the doc couldn't find the small finger bone. She said she didn't see any clefting. Of course I googled and scared the pee out of myself! Since then I have gotten great support and comments from mom's who have gone through it and I am just trying to breathe!!! I have wanted this little nugget for so long, I am not going to miss a day of happiness with it.. either in my belly or in the world. Thinking of you Mama!!!

I've been there, and it's an awful place to be. When I was pregnant with DS he had 3 or 4 markers for Tri 21 and they all ended up disappearing by the follow up u/s!! I think it's the dr/tech erring on the side of caution, but there are just so many false positives that I've opted for no u/s this pregnancy for that very reason. Try not to dwell on it too long...you will find out soon enough and hopefully can put your mind at ease.

DD Crashing from October

My 18 week scan showed a couple soft markers as well- echogenic bowel and an uncoiled umbilical cord- they referred me to a perinatologist and a genetic counsellor, both of whom offered me an amnio, which I declined both times. Being 25 years old, the risk of the amnio far outweighs the risk of genetic abnormality, especially after a normal AFP screen.

I know it's hard not knowing, but I'm just trying to stay positive, and I am 100% sure that I'm having a perfect little baby.

And you will too. I think it's in their natures to prepare you for the worst, but I've had some wonderful peptalks from other mamas on MDC who have BTDT, and everything turned out fine.

Sending love and positive vibes to you
