Rory's birth story starts on Monday January 18th around 5 PM. I began having mild contractions and was super tired so I laid down to take a nap. During my nap I realized that the contractions were coming about every 10 minutes apart, but they were very easily handled.

I sat with the kids for dinner and had a little bowl of soup. It was getting late so we let them play for a little bit and then started the bedtime routine. As always I nursed and rocked dd to sleep and while I did I decided to time a couple contractions. Nursing had caused them to pick up quite a bit (as expected) and I was hopeful, but not really optimistic that this was "it." We settled in for a TV show and I passed the time playing on my laptop and watching TV.

Shortly after 8 PM I reluctantly told dh that we should maybe call his parents and give them a heads up that tonight might be the night. I was really hesitant about this because I was NOT convinced and I didn't want to bother them with getting all ready to watch the kids if things were just going to fizzle out a few hours down the road. I decided to pack the last few things in my bag *just in case* so I wouldn't have to run around packing when the contractions got difficult. By now they were about 5 minutes apart and between them I was chatty and in good spirits.

At 8:30 dh began to pack the car. He asked about calling the doctor but once again I was afraid of heading to the hospital much, much too soon. After all--I had only been having "serious" contractions for about a half an hour. I told him my plan was to hang out and re-evaluate at 9 PM. I began texting back and forth with my mom between contractions, letting her know that we thought this might be it.

At 8:50 I freaked out and demanded that dh call his mom and the doctor RIGHT AWAY. Contractions were HARD, they were 3 minutes apart and it was time to go! The doctor wasted no time, told us to get on the road right away and she would meet us there.

MIL/FIL walked in and we dashed out to the car to start the 1/2 hour drive. We reached the hospital around 9:30 and it was not soon enough. We pulled up to the door and went inside where they were waiting. They buzzed us in and rushed us right to our room. They checked on the baby and monitored a few contractions and checked my progress. 4 cm, 70% effaced and -1. The doctor walked in and suggested a shower or the tub. I told her (typical for me) no way, I couldn't do this, I needed an epidural. She told me that we needed to slow down a bit, being in the car was a huge stress on me. They turned down the lights and began filling the tub. Contractions were a lot more manageable once I was in the water and I was able to calm down and focus.

At 10 PM I was feeling out of control and once again I said that I couldn't do it, I didn't want to do it. The doctor told me I was in transition and that I could do this but I kept insisting I couldn't. She said, "What if I check you and you are like 8 cm, then could you do it?" I paused and said, "If I really am 8 cm then I can do it." She checked me and I was 9.

They began draining the tub and hoisted me out, ran me back to my bed. The doctor raised the back all the way up and instructed me to kneel and face the back of the bed and kind of hug it/lean on it, use it to support myself. Dh donned a blue scrub shirt and got ready to help catch!

I had two contactions and with the second one I felt that familiar slamming down sensation at the end. Time to push. The next contraction I pushed with all I had and felt the baby's head come out. I heard them declare there was meconium and they told me to stop pushing and suctioned her. After what seemed like forever but was really only a few seconds (same contraction) I told them that I had to keep going!!! I gave another push and out came her shoulders and the rest of her body. I was surprised when dh declared that it was a girl!! I turned around and laid down and they placed her on my chest. Aurora Kate, born at 10:36 pm. 6 lbs., 8 oz and 19"
