Another sad ending. Went in today and ultrasound revealed that our baby stopped growing at around 7 weeks. I would like to avoid a D&C, are there any herbs I could use to help my body? I'm waiting for a call back from my midwife. I just can't stand the feeling of a poor little dead baby inside me. good luck to all you other mamas. I wish you all happy healthy pregnancies and easy births.

I'm so sorry.
I've read about herbs that are used to help induce menstrual flow that can also encourage a m/c to start, but I've never tried them personally.
I've opted out of D&C's each time, and the waiting is really hard, but it just comes down to whether you'd rather be at the hospital or at home. I prefer curling up on my couch with a blanket. I'm really sorry you have to go through this at all. Take care of yourself

I am so sorry. If your midwife can't help, you might check to see if there is an herbalist or an acupuncturist in your area. Either one may be able to prescribe something.

Sending peaceful, healing thoughts to you.

I'm sorry for your loss.

When I had a blighted ovum a week before my wedding, I opted for misoprostol induction rather than a D&C. This was before I discovered MDC and more natural therapies. It did its thing very well, although I know it isn't a popular drug on these boards and isn't without risks (like any drug). I had the insertion on Monday around lunchtime (IIRC), started contracting in the afternoon, and passing tissue by mighnight. By Tuesday lunchtime it was all over.

FWIW, I only did this to avoid a spontaneous miscarriage during my wedding. If the timing had been different, I would have let things progress naturally.

I'm so sorry. I've never induced a m/c naturally, just medically.

The doctor I saw today was very comfortable with letting me wait it out. She said it could very well take a good long while. She offered to write me z prescription for Cytotec which I am not at all interested in, and left the option open for me to call and schedule a D&C if I want to. It sounds like I should have good luck with herbs, but I am also wondering, what are the chances that she is wrong? Her ultrasound machine was very old. Maybe our dates are off and she just couldn't see the heart beating? My uterus is tilted back, maybe it was just a difficult angle? I just can't help but wonder, I feel like my body has failed me! I had no idea that anything was going wrong! Maybe it was just a bad scan? Or am I in denial? This is just too much to deal with!

mama. I'm so sorry. If you are in doubt, could you have your levels checked? That would tell you for sure if the pregnancy was over and then at least you wouldn't be second guessing things while you wait.

At this stage, if your dates are wrong, you very well could induce a miscarriage on a healthy baby. I would wait a week and ask for a repeat u/s, or draw beta hcg levels, or both.

I felt that way too. I went in for HCG blooddraws & that helped me cope. You don't need to wait a week for blood levels, you can do that now & then again tomorrow.

I'm so sorry, it's such a tough thing to go through. Feel better soon.

I recall my midwife recommending black and blue cohosh to help start contractions, I never had to take them myself so check it out online a bit more before going that route. Heal soon.

I have decided to go back home and visit my family and have my old midwife check my levels. I need to know for sure that this pregnancy is a loss or I will always wonder. My mdwife here can't order any lab work due to state laws and I would much rather drive 6 hours and be near my family and beloved midwife then wait 4 in that doctors office (twice) again and be treated like cattle by the staff. If it is indeed a loss, my midwife recommended black and blue cohosh. Thanks all, I love being able to come here for support. I am putting my grief on hold for now!

I think your plan is sound. My sister had a similar situation with an ultrasound and a recommended D&C- and now has a healthy and happy 4 year-old.

Best of luck to you!

Be good to yourself. I'm so sorry.

Be cautious, if you have a strong reaction to herbal remedies. In late June, after finding that my unborn baby no longer had a heartbeat, I took a variety of herbs that ended up causing me to bleed pretty badly, and even though I wanted to avoid the hospital, I ended up in the ER anyway (my blood wasn't clotting, it was flowing so quickly).

It's not uncommon, but it is rare enough that most MD's act as if it were an impossibility. I have a story of a pressured D&C who is now a perfect 3 year old, and because of that experience, I encourage every mom to be certain before they make a decision. I 100% understand the need to move on if they are certain, but if you have any doubt, don't rush into anything.

Thanks. My midwife back home is pretty confident that my baby is dead and won't test my blood for me. I am going to just wait a few weeks and get an ultrasound from wherever will let me schedule one without a referral (if that's even possible). After reading the stories on that website, I just can't accept this loss today. Not without further testing. I'm aware that it's pretty likely my baby is really dead, but I haven't given up all hope yet.

I'm going to reiterate the need for further testing, and also express my surprise that the midwife didn't at least offer to do a repeat scan a week hence.

With my blighted ovum, it was pretty obvious to me that there was no baby in the sac. I mean, I could see it, empty sac. We opted to check levels AND do a repeat scan a few days later. In the meantime, I spoke to a friend who was told she was diagnosed with a blighted ovum...who is now a happy 11-year-old! Alas, my levels were falling, and the repeat scan showed a collapsing egg sac, so there is no doubt in my mind that there was no baby. But you are so smart and right to make certain!
