Hi

I am a first-time mom living in Atlanta. I would like to go for a waterbirth option. I am currently seeing an Ob/GYN in Marietta. I have read some good reviews about waterbirth at North Fulton Regional Hospital.
Can anyone please guide me as to how I can choose a midwife for water birth?
I have heard abt Margaret and Kay being the best midwives.
Do I ask my Ob/GYN or should I contact the midwives directly?? Once i choose a midwife do i no longer go for check-ups with my OB/GYN??
I need your suggestions.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks
Farrey

I would try to re-post this in the finding your tribe area for Georgia. You'll have local mama's that will know a LOT more about the resources in your area.

There's lots of info on North Fulton and AMC (Atlanta Medical Center) in the GA, FL, AL Tribes section.

That being said, I'm in GA and am planning a water birth at North Fulton. Personally, I think Kay is the bees knees and would definitely recommend her. She works out of Alpharetta Women's Specialists. Margaret and company started working out of AMC a few months ago (AMC recently started offering water births). From what I gather, mommies are diggin' their experiences there.

AMC is in the heart of Atlanta though. If you're in Marietta, I'm thinking North Fulton would be a less grueling drive for you. Good luck! I hope you find the info you're looking for!

Thanks for all your replies.

I spoke to my OB about waterbirth but turns out I may not have a normal delivery. My Ob/GYN feels that it will be tougher for me to deliver vaginally because of my height ( I am 4' 10") and hence smaller pelvis.
I am already into my third semester. He thinks waterbirth is a very bad idea.

Do you think now is a good time to switch from OB/GYN to a midwife and still attempt waterbirth or do I stick with him and have a c-section?

Thanks

So if it's going to be tougher, than wouldn't a water birth possibly be even better?

Don't take his word for it! Get a second opinion for sure!!!

I would switch to the midwife. If she has any concerns she will let you know, that would be a good way to get a second opinion.

I suggest doing a home birth water birth if you are a low risk pregnancy. I ended up switching and going that route at 30 weeks. I kept seeing my OB until 36 weeks just in case but was simultaneously seeing a home birth midwife. There is just no way to recreate the feeling of a home birth in a hospital setting. In a hospital, you generally have to fight for a natural birth, and that is completely opposite of what you should be doing. I was in a meditative-like state the entire labor (even though I've never meditated before). My labor was relatively quick, relaxed, comfortable, and pain free. My son was born easily in water with no real pushing at all. He was a healthy 8 pounds. I am very sure that would not have been my experience had it been in the hospital. All those people poking and prodding and lights and noises. It's all so unfamiliar, it sets your unconscious on edge. Being at home is the only way to go in my opinion, and is actually safer than hospital birth for low risk pregnancies. I'm planning my next pregnancy in Atlanta and will be doing a home birth water birth!!!

Hey,

Thank you all for your encouraging suggestions and information. I have finally decided to make a switch to a midwife and hopefully try for a waterbirth. Planning to meet some of them at the Alpharetta Women specialists. Better late than never!!!

I have realized that there is no point sticking around with somebody who wouldn't even let me labor. I cant believe he almost made up my mind that I can never deliver normally.

Even if I have to end up with a C-section, it should be after trying for a normal or for some valid reason and not just because of my height or shoe size.

Thanks

Yes! I think this is a great solution! I mean, I suppose they could be right... but why not at least let you try?!

Hi GoVbac:

I was following some of your posts and am really intrigued by your experience. If possible, could I pick your brain a little? I'm also highly aiming for a VBAC in June, Diane is my midwife and I'm trying to decide if I want to deliver at N Fulton or Emory. I would love any insite you can give on your birthing experience and on the hospital overall.

If it would be better, please feel free to send me a personal message. Thanks for your help.
