We're just plain stuck. We've had a girl name since forever, but no boy names.

Like almost everyone else, we're looking for something not too popular but not too out-there. We don't want the teacher to stumble over his name in November, nor do we want him to grow up believing that his last initial is part of his first name (most of us probably remember a teacher talking to a classmate: "Please sit down, Michael W." "It's your turn, Jennifer P." Which always sounded very weird to me.). Something that sounds equally appropriate prefaced by "The Honorable" and yelled across the aisle at Target.

We're also avoiding "e" endings (just too many on both sides), anything from the Aiden/Hayden/Jaden family, or anything obviously inspired by Harry Potter (long story).

My husband's last name is one syllable, but I'd rather not post it (I don't want this to become Googlable). We're not worried about how it will pair with his sister's name. (Her given name is quite literally one-of-a-kind so nothing really pairs with it, but nothing really clashes either.)

Thanks!

DH and I are having the hardest time with boys names! We have about 5 girls names and love all of them - it will be hard to decide which one to use. We had about 10 boys names and just crossed about half of them off the list. Now we have 4 or 5 and we are not crazy about any of them. Ds's name is Owen. When we picked it out 5 years ago it was in the 50's on the top 100, so we thought "well, it's a little more common than we like, but it's the only name we can agree on, so hopefully it wont get more popular". Well, it did, and now it's like number 18. We hear Owen's all over the place. I don't like bible names and I don't want anything on the top 100 and that means only really weird stuff is left. Hopefully this baby is a girl!

My criteria are 1) old/classic 2) multiple sylables 3)nickname "built-in" so these are mine in favorite order:

1) Ezekiel-Zeke
2) Gabriel-Gabe
3) Theodore-Theo (not Ted, Ed or Teddy, blahhh)
4) Thaddeus-Thad
5) Nicholas-Nick
6) Augustus-Gus

Paired with the middle name of either Edward or Clarence after my maternal grandfather. Hope these help!

We had almost the exact same requirements--no "ayden" names, none ending in ee (except Gregory, which we both like for some reason) and our last name is one syllable. We decided on Mitchell Elliot. Both of those names are somewhere in the 300 range in popularity but don't feel too weird or out there to me. We also tossed around Derek and Camden, and our 3 year old is named Dillon. We generally prefer names that can't be easily shortened into a nickname, but we decided we can live with Mitch if we have to (and I really don't think it will be an issue unless he decides to shorten it himself, I never had a hard time with people shortening DD's name, which is Elizabeth. She chose to start going by Lizzie as she got older).

Mom to Liz (14) and Dillon (3) and Mitchell FINALLY born 7/11/10!

Yeah we went through 3000+ names and no luck... now, if this baby was a girl (which it isn't) I have like 8 possible awesome names...

Ones I like but aren't considering because it's a brother in laws name or something include:
Christian
Justin
Noah
Corbin and
Shawn

I'm still searching for the "right" feeling and fit for this one...

We're having a boy, and his name will be Asa Sebastian. My last name (and his first last name) start with an A, so his initials spell his name. I know my husband's name will be hyphened on the end, but the effect is still there.

This baby is named Jack. After my dad. It is more popular than we would normally choose but we like it and are keeping it. There was an interesting article that was referenced about how you would have to scan 6 classrooms to find two kids named the same thing. Basically there are less people naming kids the top names. I wish I had bookmarked the article it made me feel better about having a more popular name.

Our other two were number 83 and 327 the years they were born. We have met other Maya's but there are no others in her grade and we know of older Carolina's but most people haven't heard of the name and assume it is pronounced like the North Carolina instead of Caro-leena. Although to be fair Maya's name gets messed up as often, people call her May(like the month)-a I think naming can be tricky no matter where you stand because they will either live being one of many or constantly correcting people for mispronouncing.

whew that was long winded. Good luck with your search

Tracy, Wifey to Jeff . Mama to Maya-Papaya 7/04 and Carolina Bean-a 5/07 and Jack 7/4/10!!

I would go with "m-eye-lo" and assume that's how it's said. But most people here speak french, so he would also go by "Mee-lo".
