Haven't even BEGUN to look for a Pediatrician

And my birth center is guilt tripping me about it!

I'm 35 weeks today.

I don't even know where to begin.... I think my main issue is selective and delayed vaccinations... Thank God I'm having a girl or else I'd have to add circumcision to that as well!

Any tips?

Try posting in your tribe asking for recommendations (or even who NOT to call).

We went through that with my DS after thinking I had a pediatrician. I had been planning on using the same one my mom used for my unvaxed sister who was 5 at the time, it turns out they were no longer accepting new unvaxed patients (or maybe she had slipped through the cracks). I didn't find this out until my first baby visit (yes, I know now that I should have confirmed their position, I assumed instead, ugh). What an emotional MESS that appointment was. The things the doctor said got my DH soo upset. Way to make brand new emotional parents question every decision they have made so far.

We ended up not having a dr for my son. He only went to that appointment and one other with that dr because he was slightly jaundiced at the first and the dr felt responsible for the followup (and we felt like the dr was mean enough to call someone if we refused/canceled the appointment). He actually hasn't had a dr visit since. We have recently found a Family Practitioner who accepts non/selective vax patients. We will have to pay out of pocket, but as often as we go to the dr that won't ammount to much, and for a dr you like and who supports your chosen parenting strategies it is worth it.

From what I understand, Family Practitioners are more likely to accept patients who don't/selectively/slowly vaccinate. Something to keep in mind. Oh, you may also have a holistic moms group in your area that may have some recommendations. Maybe check their website and see http://www.holisticmoms.org/

And good luck!

No.

Totally haven't even looked! It's crossed my mind a couple of times but I definitely don't have it narrowed down or anything.

I had a friend mention a couple of docs in town that were bf and antivax friendly, so I will probably ask her for the names again. We don't really use the doctor much
dd hasn't been for a few years because that's when we stopped doing vax and I became really disillusioned with the approach at her pediatricians office. I have been meaning to find a family doc that leans more toward naturopathy but there are not a lot of options here in my hometown . . . It's been like a long-term procrastination thing here

Ahh, we don't even have ANY doctors accepting patients in this city, much less specialists like pediatricians! I've given up hope for finding a family doctor, and we'll be going to walk-in clinics instead...even the city suggests this route, since they keep a list of all new doctors, and the list has had ZERO names on it for years now. I guess it's very different in the US!

That's me too. I need to do it but there just are so few options here and they are hard to find. I suppose it would be unreasonable to drive 18 hours each way to our old doctor that I loved.

Added: Thanks for bringing it up! I just called a family practice DO (the only one around here I know of. They said that selective vax wouldn't be an issue! Wahoo! I don't have super high hopes but it's a start.

We just moved across the country (back to our hometown, Louisville) and don't have a ped. for our kids either. The dr. we used to see is no longer taking unvaxed/delayed/selective vaxing patients so we need to find someone else. I have a couple recommendations and just need to get on it. It's so annoying though. My oldest has a couple vaxes (Td and MMR), my little guy is being "fully" vaxed (the 4 required for school) and the baby will be unvaxed until at least 4.

My doc's a family practitioner and will see the baby. (She's very hands-off, answered "good, now I don't have to talk you out of it" when she asked if we'd given thought to circumcision, and is accepting of delayed/selective/not vaccinating, though we do plan to vaccinate.) Thankfully. One less thing to worry about.

Like the pp mentioned have you tried posting in the finding your tribe?

I asked my midwife for a recommendation. I called the number she provided, I'll go there 1-2 days after the baby is born at home. If I like them maybe I'll go back. If I don't... its just a check up. I figure I'll work out all the details later!

Good luck!

ddcc i wouldn't have a clue either if i had to actually seek out a Paediatrician, my kids are registered with the same dr.'s i am and see who we see when we book an appointment depending who is working that day.

Good luck with your search

No offence but things seem to be so much harder for mums/expectant mums in the US, having to interview OB's/MW's, Having to search for a Paediatrician, not having maternity leave, i think you all deserve a medal

we have a family dr, so that detail already taken care of here! I like having a family dr because if more than one person in the fam needs to see the dr, and one of them happens to be an adult, then we just go to one person for one appt. Probably not a concern for you, but we have a large fam and it seems like if one needs to see the dr, then someone else does too.
the other thing is, we live in a rural area where there isn't a whole lot of options, in fact I don't think there are any just peds around here.

One of the midwife assistants gave me a list of folks to check out, but the two best ones are 45 minutes away from where I live

Additionally, my top choice is kind of a children's "boutique" doctor and doesn't take insurance. But he's the kind of doctor you can call in the middle of the night, too.

If worse comes to worse, go to *any* pedi for the first few months. Many pedi's will leave you alone if you say you will start vaccinating at 2 or 4 months. I ended up showing up at the 4 month appt and saying "oh I'm delaying it now until 6 months" the 6 months appt comes along and then it becomes "oh we are waiting until 1 year" then at 1 year we get kicked out of the office
