After an hour and a half of contractions he was out. We were on our way out the door and I had to go back to the bathroom. Told dh to call the midwife office back to tell them we were not going to make it there first, but then in the same breath I told him to call 911. 2 major contractions and he was here. Water broke as he was coming out.
6.9 lbs 18 in long Born at 8:41am into my hands over the toilet.
Wowee! That's fast! I hope you can fill us in on the rest of the story (what was it like when the EMTs arrived? How were things in the meantime?) when you get a chance. I'm very interested in hearing unplanned homebirth stories since if I had one, it would be unplanned.
I had been having contractions since Saturday/Sunday. They never progressed into a rhythm and would tapper out after a few hours before starting back up hours later. I wasn't having anything new Sunday night as I went to bed, and when I woke up in the night nothing happening then either. Around 7am I woke up to pee and laid back down. I was having some cramping, but only when I was laying on my right side. They then started when I was on my left side. I got up and decided to see if they were real, or just gas. I was sure it was just gas. They were still spaced out quite a bit and irregular. Daylen was bugging me asking for stuff and being 4, so I called Dh at 7:10 and had him come home so he could take care of the kids while I did my thing. I also called my Doula. She was about to head to an appointment and said she'd be ready to go around 9. I was sure we had all the time we needed.
Dh came home and took a shower. He then called his mom to let ask if she could come and get the kids. I had him wash the tub out for me, and I ran a bath. I was in the bath for maybe 10 minutes before I couldn't take it anymore. I had to be moving around.
As I was getting dressed I told dh to call the midwife's office. It was about 8:14am at the time. At this time I was saying I needed an epi if I had to go hours more like this.
I went to the bathroom and threw up. I also felt like I needed to use the bathroom. As I was sitting on the toilet dh was on the phone with the nurse at the midwife's office. They wanted me to go in there and then go to the hospital. I told them I wasn't sure I could make it to both. This was about 8:30. Our phone with the cable company went out after dh looked up the office number online. I also started having bloody show. I kept trying to tell them that I was having bloody show and that I needed to get to the hospital, I don't have time to go to the office first. They insisted that it was necessary to go to the office first.
I get up and dh and the kids go out the door. I stop in the door way and tell dh to put the kids in the car I had to go to the bathroom again. I get in there and realize I wasn't going to make it out of the house. I scream for him, and he comes back inside. I tell him to call the midwife's office back and tell them I'm not going to make it, but before he could get the phone I tell him to call 911 instead.
I have my hand down holding my bottom and I can feel the pressure pushing out. At that time a big contraction hit that all I could do was scream. Then my water broke in my hand. The next contraction came on, and again all I could do was scream. Dh comes in the bathroom and I tell him the head is coming out. He tells the 911 operator that the head was coming out, and the 911 guy ask how far apart my contractions were. Like that mattered at this point!
His head came out so fast I couldn't slow it down at all. He had his head out and I checked his neck for the cord. He turned and his shoulders came out along with the rest of him. I told dh to get a towel. I sat there for a moment wiping him off and checking him out. He started to cry and was pink and healthy. The 911 guy was telling dh to get a string, and I told him that wasn't needed that we were not clamping the cord. About this time the first responder got there. I asked what time it was and was told it was 8:45. So we are saying time of birth was 8:41am.
The first responder checked him over and said he was fine, and then the EMTs got there. They checked him out and felt he was fine and let me carry him to the stretcher in the hallway. He wanted to clamp the cord, but I told him no. He asked why so I educated him on the importance of not cutting the cord too soon. I let him cut it when we were almost at the hospital. It is about a 20+ minute drive. Dh got to the hospital before we did!
They get me upstairs and on the bed. Midwife helps me get the placenta out, and I told her I felt a burning in a spot. She looked and I had a small tear. Took 2 stitches. This is the first time I've ever tore, but he didn't waste any time coming out!
We are both fine and he is so alert and awake. He latched right on during the ride to the hospital and stayed latched on the whole trip. He isn't shy around the boob, and is very ready to nurse.

This just cracks me up so much. It's like he was following a script for a sit-com. This is real life son! Once the head's on its way out, you're waaaaaay past timing contractions!
