Anyone's baby ever have this? We've had a terrible week. We brought Eliza to the emergency room on Monday with shallow rapid breathing. When we got there we noticed a rash had spread over her whole body. We now think the rash may have just been a heat rash, but no one knows. They put her through a ton of tests, spinal tap, catheter, it was awful, and found no bacterial infection. After 72 hours of monitoring, they diagnosed a viral infection and sent us home. She doesn't really act sick or anything, but her breathing is still not right. I am sick with worry. Have any of you mamas heard of this before?
I'm sorry to hear this, it sounds awful. No, I havn't btdt but the day after her birth my babe and I both caught a bad cold. Her breathing was worrying us like crazy so we took turns being awake with her ariund the clock. We were super worried and it sucked. Such a crappy feeling. Hang in there, it will get better.
are there any other symptoms but the rapid shallow breathing? And how long did the rash stay?
I ask because my dd would breath real rapid and quick but our doc said it was normal for newborns to breath irregularly, as long as they were not struggling for air, turning blue, retracted ribs that sort of thing then they are likely fine. Hope everything is well!
There are really no other symptoms. They took two chest x-rays, and did an echocardiogram as well and found nothing. The rash comes and goes, and the drs think it might not even be related to the virus (we assume) that is causing the rapid breathing. We think her skin is just really sensitive. Her breathing is always rapid and has been since last weekend. The lowest it has been is in the high 50s (breaths per minute) and has been as high as the high 80s. It is now hovering in the mid 60s which is better, but still not right. Her color is good and her ribs are not retracting.
Thanks mamas. She seems to be doing a little better, although had an episode of more very rapid breathing at around 2:00 this morning. The Dr. said we don't need to bring her back in unless the rapid breathing (when it gets to the high 70s) doesn't go away, or if her color looks off, or her ribs retract. She seems to be getting enough oxygen, it is just that she's getting it in shallow rapid breaths. I just want to breathe for her. I want her to be healthy.
Hmm. I'm inclined to say she's fine. We just went through the gamut of testing for E's apnea, all done with a pulmonologist, and breathing rate was a big focus. Now, my baby girl drops her breathing rate down to 6. SIX!!! That's not normal, not anywhere close. She also stops breathing...whole nuther thread, but my point is that they explained the range is 15-75. When they are CONSISTENTLY higher or lower than the range, then they get worried. Periodically being above or below the range is ok.
Babies DO breathe 'funny' and nothing like how we breathe. If there's no other symptoms (fever, feeding issues, turning blue, bowel issues) then I would vote for you to breathe easy

I sure hope you are right! There are no other issues. She eats great, and is a very easy baby so far, other than this. She is pretty consistently around 65 breaths per minute. Sometimes, like last night, she goes into the 80s, but really very rarely goes below 60. I always thought 40-60 was normal, but the drs do seem ok with where she is at now, but want us to watch her closely. Your post really made me feel a lot better, so thank you so much for that. I hope your little one's breathing improves too. They sure can scare us, huh!
I'm thinking as well as hoping that your babe is okay. My dd's breathing was the first time that I ever mentined breathing rapidly to a doc. I didn't worry about anything with my other two. If I were you, I'd just stop counting respirations...you'll drive yourself nuts! If she's a happy healthy baby then I'd relax and just keep an eye on it.
