Just got The Pregnancy Book and it says the 6th month is week 21-25...is that the schedule you all are going by? Sorry, this is just really taking me by surprise! Is it correct?

I figure it like this:

Weeks 1-4 = 1 month
5-8 = 2 month
9-12 = 3 month
13-16 = 4 month
17-20 = 5 months
21-24 = 6 months...ect.

Wouldn't 21-25 weeks be 5 weeks instead of the usual 4 for a month? At any rate, when people ask how far along I am I reply with how many completed months I am. So, at just past 20 weeks now I tell people I'm 5 months along, although technically I am *in* my 6th month. When I'm 24 weeks along then I'll start telling people I'm 6 months pregnant. Does that make sense?

Yeah, that totally makes sense. That's the schedule I've been using so far, too. So, hmm. This pregnancy book makes me want to say month 6 though!!

By the way, I'm in my 20th week too! Congrats!

As someone who has "fashionably late" babies, I'm always tempted to say I'm the farthest along possible cause maybe the time WILL go faster. LOL.

The first month starts on day 1, and you are 1 month pregnant at the end of that month.

If you're counting months as four weeks (which is fine for lunar months but confuses the lay person who wants exactly 9 months in a pregnancy), the 6th month starts at 21 weeks (the end of 20 weeks being 5 months pregnant, so you're done with all 5 months), but you aren't 6 months pregnant until the end of 24 weeks.

You might also think of a baby starting her second year the day of her first birthday, but you wouldn't say that she's two years old until she finishes that year.

Is this the Sears Pregnancy Book? That thing drives me with dates. They don't count the two weeks before ovulation, at least in my book, so they're always off with what every other book, dr., and pregnancy site lists. Plus I think they have some developmental stuff in the wrong places.

I go by my ovulation date as day 1 of month 1. Every time I pass that date (right at the start of the month, for me), I start a new month. I'm 20 weeks+ and, at the end of April, I'll be at the end of my 5th month. May marks the begining of my 6th month (holy crap!)

I go by weeks so I don't have to deal with that headache! But at 20 weeks I'd say 4.5 month to make that 9 month pregnancy thing make sense.

Some books have 5-week months because not all months are only four weeks. It's confusing as hell.

But when I say how many months I am, I say what month I'm in currently. Like if I'm 7 weeks, I say "I'm 2 months pregnant" because I'm in my second month of pregnancy, not my first.

But reallly I just say whatever I feel like. If I'm near some border that some books claim is four months, and some claim is five, I'll just say whichever one I want depending on how pregnant I feel that day. If I'm talking to a woman who has had babies, I say the week. Talking to a man or a woman who doesn't know about pregnancy, I'll say whatever month pops into my head.

Like I'm 19 weeks right now I'd probably say I'm 5 months. But I could say 4 if I felt like it.

I remember my last pregnancy having this conversation with the little host boy at work, and I was going by four weeks = month. And he kept adding it up in his head and saying "but that comes to TEN months." I said "yeah, well, you don't instantly give birth when you hit ninth months. You still have to go through your ninth month of pregnancy." I think we ended up even more confused than when we started.

DDCC from June.

I tend to say either how many weeks i am or how many i have left to go. If i refer to months i use calendar months - i'm due June 1st so i'm 35weeks today, but will be 8months on Saturday (May1st). At the moment though i'm pretty big and people tend to say "how much longer" and i reply "too long"

This is one of those things where the 40-week dating system drives me nuts. If you count conception to EDD, it comes to just under 9 calendar months, about 9 lunar months. So, although I'm at "18 weeks" now, it's really just 16 weeks from conception, which I think puts me at 4-5 months. Someone asked me the other day how far along I was and I wound up saying: "Uh... Somewhere in the middle?"

I just read my last reponse and it was about as clear as mud.

I think the advice you got in your other thread about counting backwards from your due date would be good. So for me (due Sept 9) it would be:

Aug 9-Sept9: 9th month
July 9-Aug 9: 8th month
June 9-July 9: 7th month
May 9-June 9th: 6th month

Is that more clear?

Weird to see it all printed out like that. We are getting so close!!

Just to muddy further, on May 1 you'll start your sixth month, but be only 5 months pregnant. You reach 6 months pregnant at the end of the sixth month.

Then again, as others have said, it doesn't matter so much. People who care (midwife/OB/doula/etc) will count in weeks with you. Everyone else will ask you every time they see you, "When are you due again?" and promptly forget your answer when you walk away. And the difference between 5 and 6 months doesn't mean much to most people!

I count back from my due date (9/28). So tomorrow, 4/28, I will have completed 4 months and be in my 5th month. Most people don't understand this, even when it comes to age (I have completed 32 years, I am 32, but I am IN my 33rd year) so starting tomorrow, I will tell non-moms 5 months, and I will tell moms 18 weeks.

In that case, you wouldn't be nine months pregnant until your due date, though.

Once I'm in my sixth months, I say that I'm in my sixth month (six months pregnant).

Which is correct. If a pregnancy lasts 9 months (for the sake of argument, since it's really only a rough average) then you're 9 months at the very end of it. You're not 9 months pregnant until you're "this close" to giving birth. You're 8 months pregnant when your due date is still 1 month away.

I like the counting backwards method, too. That also puts me at the end of my 4th month, as of yesterday, and entering my 5th month.

See I figure a pregnancy lasts 10 months because it's 40 weeks. So the ninth month or pregnancy is the last, on your due date is when the ninth month ends.

If you're counting 10 months (which is lunar months, not calendar months) then the 10th month of pregnancy is your last, and you are 10 months on your due date.

The 9 month number is more commonly used and refers to calendar months. By this method you are 9 months pregnant on your due date.

Same numerical logic, different counting systems. I put more specific numbers in the post on the general I'm Pregnant board if you're interested, comparing lunar and calendar months.

Yup. You're only "ten months pregnant" if you're going by 28-day cycles/moon cycles...and even then only when you're at your due date.

I tend to round and estimate what month I'm in. If I'm close to being a full six months pregnant (even if technically I'm "in my sixth month") I say I'm six months pregnant.

I am still confused! LOL

I try to tell people I am "in" my 5th month, instead of saying I am 5 months pregnant. If that makes any more sense?

This thread is cracking me up.

I just wrote whatever week I'm on on my calendar starting from when we found out til ETA, so I don't forget.

When people ask, I tell them I'm due Labor Day--which is a funny pun to me.

And I don't even bother with figuring the rest out.

I did an Excel spreadsheet with DD to help me figure this all out.

I have a pregnancy as lasting 266 days from conception, or about 8.7 calendar months, which puts the 6th calendar month as starting when the baby is between 21 and 22 weeks old (when you are considered between 23 and 24 weeks pregnant). At that point you would have completed your 5th month, so you'd be either 5 months along or in your 6th month.

I'm 23 weeks today, so in a few days if people ask I'll probably start saying I'm 5 months. Right now I've been saying I am 4 1/2 months. Since pregnancy lasts a little less than 9 months the 1/2 seems significant to me.

And like someone else posted if it is someone who will know what I'm talking about I just say how many weeks I am.

I realized that being due 9/1, I can just use whatever month of the year it is and that's how many months I am...Now that it's may (the 5th month), I'm 5 months pregnant. So easy.
