I wonder how long it is likely for me to keep dilating and effacing without actually going into labor. At 35 weeks I'm 2 cm and 40%. At 36 weeks I'm 3 cm and 70%. So far this week I've had the same amount of contractions and cervical twinges and pressure, so it's fairly safe to assume things are still going on. I mean, could I even possibly keep going, dilating about a cm a week, until like 40 weeks at which point I'd be like 7 cms? That sounds like a Twilight Zone episode or something.

More is better...tends to make it go faster later.

On a related note (to cervix position), can you feel your baby's head? And does it move? When I try to feel the head through my belly, I can feel it, but it doesn't move. When I try internally, I can also feel it, but it's not lined up well, and doesn't move at first, but if I push just a bit, it will float back up.

Firstly...is that bad? I'm not pushing very hard, and I'm only using one finger.

And secondly, how about your baby?

teamsalem- that is really good to know!

Just1More - My totally inexperienced thought is that it is pretty normal for the baby's head to easily float back up until it is really engaged and time for labor - especially for 2+ time moms.

My baby floats up and down a lot. I usually check my cervix when the baby is dropped a bit lower and she does not float up as easily as you describe, but the change between floating high/dropped lower happens frequently

I really wish I knew but I am terrified to check it myself.

Im having mostly-painless contractions about 3 minutes apart that last around 20 seconds (but I had to take castor oil for my constipation) and would love to know if its doing anything or if I can go back to bed without worrying that Im going to wake up in full blown transition, unable to call my midwives or husband.

Oh my Mae. You should check.

Ironically, since my boy is nowhere near optimal birth position (we'll just call him an 'unstable lie' since he can't seem to decide where his head should go), my cervix was waaaaay lower last night than it has been since I started doing EPO! It's still thickish but I would guess 2+cm. I'm so glad someone mentioned it opening "wide" rather than "round" because that's how mine is, too. Defintely waaaaay more open than I've ever noticed. Very cool!

Well, day before yesterday it was still about 50% effaced and about a stretchy 3 1/2. After several hours of contractions yesterday DH couldnt find it at all anymore but we think it's fully effaced and still pretty posterior. DH said he could feel a little knot or bump, very small (like a pea) that moves with the baby. I havent the foggiest idea what that could be. LOL Zero idea on what the dilation could be at this point since DH couldnt even really find it.

Guess we'll see!

According to my OB:

36 weeks: posterior, closed, long, soft
37 weeks: exactly the same

38 week apt will be on Friday...

Mind you I am an amateur at effacement (pro at gauging dilation lol)

but I would estimate myself at about 40-50% effaced, yesterday was like 25%

yesterday I was only dilated about 1cm

earlier today 2cm

now 3cm

progress!

Cool Mae!

As usual, nothing for me...never is. I'll have several hours of Bh like contractions and NO change, and then BAM...it's like getting in a swimming pool or something. My body has to slowly think about jumping in, but then when it does it's going all the way! Lol.

Try while sitting on the toilet. It's always been easiest for me.

yeah I have to do it on the toilet or the edge of the bathtub (i never attempt that while pregnant though, my balance disappears!) after the shower... so im still clean but in a more suitable position (especially to get around the tummy!)

1cm and relatively thick.

I love my OB, though. He asked me if I even wanted a check or not (I'm 39wks and this is my first), reminded me that it means almost nothing, but said he'd check me if I'm curious.

He totally gets it. A quick check later, he (knowing my history) said he thinks it'll be at least another week, though really it's impossible to tell.

I'm 39w1d today, and dh is done teaching his first week of the school year. This was the day, mentally, when I said I'd let go and start being willing to have a baby (for the sake of the family's schedules). Now, it seems, I need to kick it up a notch. Methinks there will be a whole lotta walking, dtd, and whatever else from now on!! Time to start encouraging baby (so polite of her to wait this long though )....

C'mon out, kiddo!

Mine seems to be playing tricks on me. Some days it seems to be moving forward, only to be further back when I check the next day!! It also seems to be getting thicker....but maybe it is just more "ripe"?? Strange...

Mine is doing the same thing. Dilation seems to stay the same but it seems to be less effaced now and it moves from posterior to anterior all the time.

I know this is a strange question, but I've never checked my cervix post-partum, and I was rather alarmed last night at how LOW it is. Like, just a couple of inches in. Is this something I should be worried about (prolapse issues?), or is that what's going on with others, too? I'm 4 wks pp.

nak

remember... low is infertile... so low isnt necessarily a problem

if you are still bleeding or just recently stopped... it could be within an inch of your vaginal opening even!

Mine is low as well! And I had never thought to check it before my last month of pregnancy, so was a little thrown that it was so low as well and was wondering if it was normal.

I just found this: http://infertility.about.com/od/tryi...xovulation.htm
