I know I don't post here much, but I thought I'd tell my story. I had a previous c-section, so my hospital policy is once a section/always a section. We are in a rural town with a small hospital. Anyway, baby girl was actually breech too, so I was bound to have a c-section.
The epideral was a nightmare. They tried to do it 5 or 6 times, with nerve pains shooting down my legs and in my back. Finally, he ended up doing a spinal after almost 2 hours of failure. I was crying, scared, and in pain. Surgery went fine. Afterward, I had the dreaded spinal headache. This pain was like no other I have ever experienced. It was mostly nerve pain in my neck, back, and arms whenever I was upright. I had to lay flat on my back for any sort of relieve. Pain meds didn't cut through the pain. On the 4th night, I was back at the hospital for a blood patch. This procedure involved another epideral, but instead of medicine, they injected my own blood to clot and cover the hole where spinal fluid was leaking out. I was once again terrified, but couldn't bare the pain anymore. It actually worked and I feel worlds better now.
I just wanted to let you mama's know that the 3 to 5 percent chance of this happening, happened to me. I'm so very thankful my baby is healthy and I am on the road to recovery now, but this was a scary experience for our family.
We are so joyful to have this little baby and so thankful I am feeling better. Much love Mamas.
Lots of to you!
(And oof on the spinal headache...I had one of those for a few days after a botched spinal tap, then went and got the blood patch...you're a brave, strong lady to be dealing with all that AND a c-section AND a new baby! Hope your recovery is fast, and keep us updated on how you're doing!)
I know at least three women who have had a spinal headache after epidural. Two were for childbirth and one was for major surgery. They all described it as excruciating. One seriously thought she was going to die. It made a big impression on me and is one of the reasons I would much rather deal with the pain of contractions than an epi. You are one brave mama! So glad the blood patch worked quickly and enjoy your beautiful baby!
