My first daughter was two weeks overdue, so I was STUNNED when I went into labor on Friday afternoon (three days before my due date). I'd just posted on here that I was concerned about his movement slowdown over the last few days, and I guess he was just getting ready to make his big entrance!

Arlo William was born at 4:47 a.m. on Saturday. 6 lbs, 8 oz. I got my VBAC, which is what I wanted and makes me really, really happy...but holy CRAP! My natural, drug-free birth was 1,000 times more painful than my c-section! Somehow I was not expecting that.

NEW EDIT: Birth story!

So on Friday my parents gave us great tickets to see a Twins game (right behind the dugout, first row!) and offered to take our daughter for the night so we could have one last date before the baby arrived. This is how the night went:

3:00 p.m.: While reading a book, I notice that I've started to breathe through some cramps. I'd been having cramps off and on for a few weeks, but these were a little more intense. Still, since I wasn't due until Monday and my first baby was so late I didn't think anything of it.

5:00 p.m.: Sitting on the birth ball suddenly sounds like something would would feel good, not just something I "should do." Still don't think much of it.

6:00 p.m.: My husband and I leave for the Twins game. The "cramps" are still there and getting stronger, but I figure that the excitement of the game will distract me and they will go away.

7:00 p.m.: We walk into the baseball stadium and I'm hit with a whopper contraction. We leave before the first pitch is thrown. Spend a few hours at home, working through the contractions.

11:00 p.m.: Arrive at the hospital. When the nurse checks me she says I'm at a stretchy two. "TWO?!" I yelp. "Um, maybe three. Yeah, let's say three," she says. That still sounds like an awful long way to go to get to 10, but I take it.

11:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m.: Everything I'd been reading about has gone out the window, and the only coping technique that sticks in my brain is to make long, low "cow sounds" through the contractions. It helps a little, but the pain so intense! And it's exhausting. I somehow doze between contractions.

2:30 a.m.: The nurse checks me again and I'm only at three. I burst into tears.

2:30 a.m.-4:00 a.m.: My midwife arrives right as the pain reaches a whole new level. I only barely register that she's in the room. A marching band could've strolled through and I wouldn't have known. I spend most of the labor sitting on the toilet, walking around the room or standing next to a desk, convinced that gravity is the only thing that will help get this baby out. Finally, I announce that something "feels different."

4:15 a.m.: The midwife checks me and I'm at 10 and ready to push! I shed grateful tears.

I push for about 20 minutes and finally, FINALLY I hear my midwife say that the baby's head is out. Two more pushes and the rest of him comes out!

The placenta actually took longer to get out than the baby. It had attached to part of my c-section scar and it took a lot of work to push it out. But overall, it was the birth that I wanted and I am so so glad. And totally in love with our new baby!

Anne - Wife to DH, mom to DD (5/08) and DS (10/10).

Congratulations, and welcome to baby Arlo! Love his name! Can't wait to hear that birth story when you're up to it--it sounds like you did great, and hopefully your recovery will be easier than it was with the C section, at least!!

Yay for Arlo!!! Love that you got your VBAC too. Painful yes but the recovery is so much faster! I've had to pop lots of ibuprofen but that's better than handfuls of Percocet after the csec. Way to go!
