So we're still stuck with a boy's name. Don't know if it's a boy or girl. Due this Friday. Anyone want to help?

We're rather sticklers about not naming the kid after someone we spend a significant amount of time with. All in our family thus far also have first names that start with 'J', and while we're not wedded to that, I wonder if the second kid would feel left out if it's another letter?

Our leading contender right now is Julian Charles, with a nickname of Jude. Our last name is our two last names together, a long 6 syllables. But I'm just not in love with Julian.

Got ideas?
restrictions - must be pronounceable in spanish but not necessary to be a spanish name. I need a name that sounds all boy, gender neutral bothers me on boys.

Here's our list of J names that are sadly out because of friends, ex-boyfriends, or the male version of DD's name: Jason, Joshua, Joseph, Jamie/James, Jeremy, Jake, Jack, Jace, Jacob

If you don't care for Julian, why not just go with Jude?

I love Julian, but I agree Jude would be a fine choice on its own, too. If Jude seems too short to you, what about Judah? I also really like Jonah and Jonas.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming!

Oops left Jonah off the list of people we know. I do like Jonas, but I think DH vetoed that one for some reason.

Jules hits the non-gender neutral issue, as I know lots of women named Julie that go by Jules.

Even if we call the kid Jude I want to give them a 'formal' name so they'd have options when they grow up, hence the Julian. Glad others like Jude too

I do like Weezer for Jonas. Now DH says he can't remember why he didn't like Jonas. I guess the only bad reference is the Jonas brothers now... but not exactly popular among 30 somethings.

Honestly, I think Jude is perfectly fine as a formal name! It doesn't sound "nick namey" to me at all. Jude is my favorite of the names you listed

I personally dislike nicknames given as formal names (like naming your kid Mike instead of Michael, or whatever), but I totally agree that Jude is a whole, formal name in itself, and is not inherently nick-namey or informal. See this site (very reputable and thorough, as online name sites go) for information on the name Jude:

ITA that Jude is a full name and not just a nickname. We have a Judah ourselves and also have friends with a Jude. I like them both quite a lot!

DDC crashing... do you plan on having more children after this babe? if so, i'd really consider going with a non-J name.. if you ever have a 3rd, you'll feel even more pressured to keep up the J theme, and it's awful to choose a name that you don't truly love.

i find boys' names really hard..

I agree! Unless you're okay with continuing the trend, of course We named our first two Bailey and Riley without thinking about it, and then when dd3 was born we felt like we had to give her a similar name or it would sound weird! (We went with Rory).

If you are leaning toward a J name, I agree that Jude works as a formal name. Other names that spring to mind are Jonathan and Joel.

I personally love Javier (definitely works in Spanish and doesn't have the 'j' sound in English, so you stick with the J trend, but you also add a new sound into the mix of family names.)

I also agree that you could branch out from J names even if this is your last baby. I think the only really undesirable situation would be to give this child a non J name and then go back to a J name if you had a third.

We're not sure yet if we're having two or three, I just keep saying we'll get to two and then figure it out. If this one is as bad a sleeper as the first, it may well convince us to keep to two!

Interesting that you all think of Jude as a full name, we'll have to bat that one around some more.

Oh I definitely shouldn't have left Javier off the list, oops that's my brother in law. And uncle in law, and cousin in law... lots of those. Jonathan I've got to say was the name of my boss who made my life suck when I was pregnant for DD1, so that's got some bad connotations for me still.

Other names we've batted around for non-J's are: Gavin (seriously getting very popular though), Kieran (this is suddenly appealing to me, but really close to my mom's name Karen), Brody, Dante, and Lucian (we like it, but it's nickname is Luke which is too popular for us plus the name of a friend's kid).

I like all your non-J names, particularly Dante, Kieran and I really like Lucian /Lucien. You could always go with the nickname Luca if you want to avoid Luke. Or spell it the French way, Luc.

Other J names I thought of: Jethro or Jeffrey.

I really like naming threads btw... might have to go DDCC and look for more!
