We left for the midwife's at around 2 in the morning on Monday. I labored naturally with the midwife, doula, and my husband Berry for 24 hours. I got to fully dilated and at around 2 pm, I started pushing but the baby just wouldn't descend, no matter what position I was in. At around 7, we headed for the hospital. I decided that if I was going to be stuck to the bed and most likely given pitocin, I was getting an epidural asap. I was extremely lucky and did not get any side effects from the epidural except for a lot of itching- which I couldn't scratch because I was numb. Weirdest feeling EVER. The car ride had made me un-dilate, so I was around 7 cm when I got there. Within a few hours of the epi and pit, I was back to ten and given the ok to start pushing. The nurse that was there was SO nice- I seriously loved her. I had to push on my back because I was numb, but I asked for a mirror so that I could watch and she brought one. The head was like... RIGHT THERE... for over 2 hours. Then, the doctor who was in and out the whole time suggested using the vacuum. I didn't want to and started flipping out (I was flipping out a lot that night... there's a reason that I chose a homebirth), but Evelyn and Berry eventually convinced me to go along with it. After a few (4? 6?) attempts with the vacuum, he said that he would need to do an episiotomy or there was just no way that the baby was going to come out. I got REALLY upset and started sobbing, but I consented. I had to think of my baby who had been through SO much at that point... his heart rate was still good, but was decelerating a little bit. So they numbed me up some more, cut me, and a few more pushes and one more vacuum suck and he was on my chest! And Berry announced that it was a boy. He was actually handed to a NICU doctor first, but she very quickly said "no, he's breathing, he's fine" and she gave him to me. He was so bloody and covered in the thickest vernix I've ever seen. He was whisked over to the warmer and Berry followed to cut the cord and all that while I delivered the placenta and got stitched up. He weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces was 19" long and is completely perfect. He did not have to spend any time in the NICU at all, and we came home last night. I'm having some trouble nursing, but he is filling his diapers so I think that we're doing ok... things will hopefully pick up once my milk comes in. So yeah.... it did not happen the way that I wanted it to, but I love my little Arthur. I'll post some pictures a little later when I get the chance. Thank you so much for your well wishes everyone, it means so much to me.
