The eye ointment will not do anything for a yeast infection only an STD infection. You can take probiotics, kefir and yogurt, you can even do yogurt douches(gently) vaginally for the infection before birth to help. Baby can pick up thrush on the way from a yeast infection which can affect breast feeding so it is worth it to treat before birth if you suspect it.

No... my babes that had eye ointment all had clogged tear ducts for months after they were born. Not worth it, in my opinion. It won't help against a yeast infection for sure.. and I'm not sure that will effect baby's eyes anyhow. He might get thrush (yeast in the mouth) but not in the eyes.

Nic, loving mama to 5 with a SURPRISE 6th on the way.

DDCC to say that my two oldest had the eye ointment, and they both had horrible blocked ducts for months too. My 2 youngest didn't get the ointment, and they both had clear beautiful eyes, no gunk or tears. I did get flack this last time (military hospital) and some fear tactics, but just stuck to my guns and they left me alone eventually.

It will not do anything for yeast. Best to attack that before labor anyway as a pp yeast infection is not fun at best.

I would not do the eye ointment unless your std status is positive or unknown.

I decline the eye ointment, although I don't know that there is a connection between it and blocked tear ducts...DD's was plugged for almost a year before it finally resolved itself. So much nicer to know that they can see properly and aren't all gooped up right during that initial quiet alert stage.

Sorry about the yeast, I had a heckuva yeast infection that took a couple months to get rid of...took 3 rounds of internal creams and a month of probiotics. Only other thing that seemed to help me was vinegar (yeast hates acid), about 1/3 vinegar and 2/3 water on a tampon, and I rinsed externally with the same solution in a peri-bottle...it seemed to help more than anything else I tried. Hope it clears up soon! I know I've been going around with my fingers crossed that it doesn't come back.

When I had a yeast infection a few months back, my MW said the most effective and quick treatment was Monistat. I got the 1-day one with external cream and all that and it worked (not instantaneously, but it worked!). She said natural stuff is never going to be fast and it's not generally as effective. I'd never gotten OTC treatments before but I was awfully miserable and willing to do just about anything! It's probably worth it to get rid of the yeast before baby comes.

Does anybody know if the eye ointment regulations vary state by state and where I might find that information? I've done it unthinkingly in the past but really don't get the point of it.

I'm not sure about that, Ellen. Might want to ask the finding your tribe section for your region.

I would also go with monistat 1 and the cream this close to your edd, pump up on probiotics, and cut out sugar as much as possible.

I've always refused the eye ointment as well, but ds still had a blocked tear duct that resolved itself before he was a year old.

We don't do the eye goop because we know we're STD free, and we want to bond freely with baby and just why do something that's not necessary, you know?

Ellen, I'd ask out on the big pregnancy board or FYT region. I know places like NY state are super strict about it, and a few others are tricker than others... here in CA we just signed a form yada yada, it took ten seconds

According to the folks over in FYT, it's just a matter of signing a waiver. So that's easy enough.

I am GBS+, though. That shouldn't make a difference, right?

DDC crash Nope, my midwife said that doesn't affect anything regarding the eye goop. I had the same concern.
