So I've been having contractions for about 5 hours now. I went to school today and came home before my first class was over. I was having contractions this morning before I left but figured they would just go away but they didn't.

My husband called my mom and is now upstairs packing (but forgot which dresser was for the baby or rather that there was a baby dresser) and being a little frantic. My son is over a friend's house.

I still am not sure if this is for real or not. I am just about 38 weeks give or take a day depending on how you calculate. I haven't had any bloody show or mucous plug loss (although I have had very this mucous over the past few weeks but nothing definitely a plug). My back is very achy.

I had a long labor with my son that started similarly but I was 40+5 when he was born.

I wish I knew for sure. It could still be weeks.

My husband needs to chill out though. He is way too excited and wants answers I can't give him.

I wish I could tell you for sure - I've never gone into labour spontaneously, though, so I can't tell you for sure.  Have a hot bath and try to relax - apparently, a bath will intensify real contractions but cause false labour to fizzle out.

I can understand the overexcitement grating on your nerves, but it's great he's so enthusiastic!

Yea, the hot bath (or shower, is what I've been doing) will make my really intense contrax fizzle out so I can get some rest. Maybe give it a try to see what happens? Or, have sex to encourage things? lol

I sure hope this is it for you!  My MW told me over and over that it's rare for a woman not to know she's in labor.  I had looooong early labor (again!!!) and then a fairly short active labor.  I know that early labor period can be really mentally taxing, wondering whether or not it's time to do XY or Z, etc.  I hope you have a lovely birth!!

Update-Not today

After 7-8 hours of regular contractions, they've fizzled out. They're still coming but much further apart and weaker.

I went to the midwife's office and she checked me. 1-2 cm dilated, 80% effaced but baby's head is still up high.

We are home now and my mom is sleeping over because she is already here and has a sub for tomorrow plus my son asked her to. He was so excited for grandma to pick him up at his friend's house today.

Hopefully soon.

I am beat though, today was a long day. We were woken up at 5:30 by a phone call from my husband's co-worker with a panicked taking the baby to the ER call and they just moved to the area. Everything ended up being fine, thankfully.

After we left the office we had terrible buffet food and then walked around the mall hoping to set things back in action. Now we are home.

I was so frustrated with the whole situation today. My husband thought I was underselling my contractions to the midwife and was so excited. The mall was not distracting at all because all we both really want is the baby to come. I can wait, but we really got our hopes up thinking today was it. I think I would have stayed home a bit longer but my husband was insistent that they were close together and long enough (which is true) and he was also concerned that the whole process of getting my mom here and then up to the hospital or office would take a while and didn't want to wait too long. He gets really frustrated when I can't give him clear answers. He said it isn't his body so he doesn't know what is going on. I told him it is my body and I still don't know what is going on.

My plan is to sleep well tonight and see what tomorrow brings.

Good luck momma.  I know how frustrating that is.  I have had it happen many times, I prelabor with all my babies.  Just think of it as time off the total.  Even though it didn't produce a baby, your body is doing things-dilation,effacement, and station are not all that needs to be done.  I am glad your hubby is excited, but I can understand it might not make you feel any better.  I hate when my hubby stares at me and asks if this is it?  If I knew I would tell you!  He has gotten so much better at it though!  Good luck again and sleep well.  remember it is more common for a second time mommy to have 'false' alarms than a first!

That does sound very frustrating and I can empathize with the husband situation.

NO contractions today. I went shopping with my mom today since she was up. Lots of walking and nothing. We ordered a pizza and are going to have a late lunch/early dinner here.

I do think I lost my mucous plug this morning so hopefully things will happen in the next couple days (but as always I am prepared for 4 more weeks).

This is very different than my labor with my first son. I went until 40+5 with him and nothing happened until I went into labor. I didn't have any contractions, lose any mucous, absolutely nothing until I woke up with contractions that slowly progressed until he was born.

I did sleep like 11 hours last night. All those contractions and excitement wore me out.
